Water cascades into this narrow canyon in the heat of summer, but in the winter the thundering falls freeze solid to create natural ice sculptures. Johnston Canyon is one of the most popular attractions in Banff National Park and has a network of steel catwalks built into the canyon walls that allows you to walk right along this cathedral of ice with airy views into the gorge below.
As you do, you’ll get to wander through a natural cave to gaze down at the flowering waters of the lower falls. Continue onto the awe-inducing upper falls - a glittering tower of ice that rise 30 metres above your head. These gigantic pillars of ice are the tour highlight and ice climbers can often be seen scaling the frozen columns.
This popular guided icewalk will lead you past the lower falls and on to view the breathtaking upper icefalls from the upper deck. You will also travel through prime wildlife habitat to reach the falls and learn the clues to how Johnston Canyon was formed.

Our guide Georgia was amazing! She was a very thoughtful guide and had many interesting facts to share about the canyon and the Banff area. She also took photos of the group whenever we wanted. It was a lovely experience seeing the lower and upper falls in November while they are partially frozen but still flowing. Ice cleats and a walking pole made the experience safe and enjoyable, many people around us were slipping without the cleats. I am a novice hiker with knee problems and I found the hike very manageable. Not too much up or down at one time, but you definitely get your steps in! Go in the afternoon slot if you want to take more time at the lookout spots.

Unfortunately we faced travel delay after delay trying to get from California to Banff. I reached out to Viator and the tour company and let them know about our predicament. They both acknowledged that there were tours later in the week and acted like it would not be a big deal to change our date. However, after a lot of back and forth they ultimately decided that “nothing could be done,” and, “their system wouldn’t let them make the change,” so we were just out our almost $400 and they refused to change us to the open slots later in the week. I understand if they tours were already sold out but because their were still open spots, I think it’s bad customer service. Just beware if you have any travel hiccups, they will not work with you.

The tour is well organized and Elijah is really nice and he tried to share more information about Banff and Johnston Canyon in addition to hiking. Although the falls were not frozen yet, happy to have a hike with the group

This hike was AWESOME! It was particularly awesome because we had a great leader, Georgia. She was so nice and fun. She kept us informed, she had us walking at a great pace (not too fast, not too slow), and she just made the whole experience really nice! She even gave some great restaurant recommendations after the hike because all of us were very hungry. (I got dinner and drinks at one of the places she recommended and it was DELICIOUS and just, overall, perfect after an afternoon of hiking). If you see this, thank you for everything, Georgia! You’re awesome! & Johnston Canyon is beautiful! (This hike group gives ice spikes that attach to your shoes - they were definitely needed and super helpful)! The hot chocolate and cookies were a nice “reward” at the top of the canyon, as well :)

I have hiked Johnston Canyon many times, but doing the Ice Walk with Discover Banff Tours was an amazing experience; I would recommend it to everyone. We also used their services to create a private customized tour for our group and utilized their very knowledgeable guides to discover new points of interest and learn so much about the destination. Beth, Georgia and Heidi were the perfect team, not only sharing stories and information, but always looking after us and providing a great atmosphere. The vehicle was very spacious, modern, and luxurious and the guides were simply the best!!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Truly Unforgettable Experience Thanks to Georgia! Our trip wouldn’t have been the same without Georgia — she is, without a doubt, one of the best tour guides we’ve ever had. From the moment the tour began, Georgia was kind, thoughtful, and incredibly accommodating. She made sure every single person in our group felt safe, comfortable, and truly cared for. Her attention to detail and warm personality made every stop along the way even more enjoyable. We saw everything we hoped for — and more — and never once felt rushed or overlooked. Georgia’s knowledge of the area and her ability to tailor the experience to our group’s needs made the journey feel personal and unforgettable. This wasn’t just a tour; it was a beautiful experience, and Georgia is the reason why. If you’re lucky enough to have her as your guide, you’re in for something truly special. Highly recommend!

Fantastic scenery, words cannot describe! Excellent guide Jake; interesting, fun, very friendly and flexible when requested. The chicken wrap was gorgeous, worth the trip on its own!

Our guide Tim was friendly and very informative. The walk itself was relatively easy and was made extra special by the freshly fallen snow that morning. Although late in the season for the ice walk, there was still plenty of ice about. Spectacular views all the way.

Went on an "icewalk" hike through Johnson Canyon mid-April 2025. The snow/ice has melted some, but it's still very picturesque! Thank goodness for those ice cleats, which are supplied by the tour company, as we'd come across some inadequate footwear and witnessed a nasty fall. Jeff, our guide, was knowledgeable and friendly. Really provided a really enjoyable trip! If you have your own cleats, it's very easy to hike up yourself - it's a set path, not difficult at all (save when there're too many people, you need to squeeze a little because of narrow walkways in some areas - with two-way traffic). Join the tour for a bespoke experience of hiking with locals who know the area well, and listen to the local stories/history they genuinely love to share with everyone.
