Kenrokuen Garden
Kenrokuen (兼六園) in Kanazawa is justifiably classified as one of Japan's "three most beautiful landscape gardens" alongside Mito's Kairakuen and Okayama's Korakuen. The spacious grounds used to be the outer garden of Kanazawa Castle and were constructed by the ruling Maeda family over a period of nearly two centuries. Opened to the public in 1871, Kenrokuen features a variety of flowering trees which provide the garden with a different look for each season.
D. T. Suzuki Museum
The D.T. Suzuki Museum (鈴木大拙館, Suzuki Daisetsu Kan) is a small museum commemorating the life and works of Suzuki Daisetz Teitaro (1870-1966), a prominent Buddhist philosopher. The museum was opened in 2011 in the district of Kanazawa where Suzuki was born, a ten minute walk from Kenrokuen. On display are exhibitions showcasing the writings of D.T. Suzuki which allow the visitor to learn more about his life and philosophy. In addition, the architecture of the museum serves as an interpretation of D.T. Suzuki's life and religious scholarship; its use of clean, simple lines and open spaces causes visitors to pause and reflect.

Masa was a wonderful guide. She checked in to gauge wanted to see and also whether we needed a break during the 4 hour walking tour. She is a local of Kanazawa and very knowledgeable. She took us to many points of interest and her pride in her city is evident. It was gorgeous to see her genuine excitement when we discovered that the plum trees had blossomed. She knew all the tricks - the roads to take to avoid walking up steep hills! Highly recommended

Our 4hr walking tour with our guide Yoshi was fantastic. Despite the very cold weather we were able to cover Kenrokuen Garden, Kanazawa Castle & the Samurai district. Yoshi was very relaxed & provided a great background to the history of the area. We loved it!

Yumi is an incredible guide. Please make sure you ask for her. For starters, our tour was highly customizable. We already had our top 3 things we wanted to see in Kanazawa and Yumi was able to adapt the entire tour to prioritize those. Yumi is super knowledgeable about Japanese history and culture. My friend and I would point out random things during our tour and ask "what's that?". To our surprise, Yumi always had a deep explanation ready. We learned a ton. As a fun fact, Yumi is fluent in three languages (Japanese, English, Portuguese), and also knows a bit of Spanish. She's a well-read person, so you'll always have something interesting to talk about with her while walking the streets of Kanazawa.

Our family of 4 (two young adult children) loved this tour. Our guide, Yoshi, was tremendous -- he was knowledgeable, friendly and helpful, and his English was terrific. He took us through the Kenrokuen Garden, Kanzawa Castle and the Samurai district. There is an awful lot we would have missed if we toured on our own. We would take this tour again in a heartbeat and strongly recommend it. If you choose this tour, be mindful that it is mostly outside and be prepared for rain. Also, Kanazawa Castle is shoe-free, and it is not heated. An extra pair of socks would have been helpful.

Yumi is friendly and knowledgeable. We booked this tour our first day in Kanazawa of a 4 day stay. My personal favorite spots on the tour were the samurai district and the beautiful Kenrokuen garden. We had a tea ceremony later in the day. Yumi was mindful of time and took us to a delicious Ramen restaurant for lunch before going to the tea ceremony. Most tours in Kanazawa use the bus system which is very efficient. This tour helped orient us so we felt comfortable using transit system the rest of our stay. Yumi is wonderful. Book her for your Kanazawa tour.

Our guide Toshis was excellent! Knowledgeable, friendly & engaging. He started us off at the Kanazawa castle complex. He explained the castle's history over the many centuries and rulers. We then went to the castle garden and took in its understated beauty. We ended up in the old Samurai neighborhood and learned about their customs, and visited one of their houses. Great tour & guide; I would recommend him & the tour.

Terrific way to get to know this wonderful city with a local. It was also good having a private guide because we made adjustments which accommodated the things we wanted to see , so we saw the samurai district and the older part of town and the big markets I’d kindly recommend it.

A delightful time with Yumi as she guided as through the Samurai and Geisha districts. She was so patient in answering all our questions. By using the public bus, we were able to leisurely cover the Samurai district, visit the ninja temple and stroll thru the geisha districts. No better way to start our stay in Kanazawa.
