Kenrokuen Garden
Kenrokuen (兼六園) in Kanazawa is justifiably classified as one of Japan's "three most beautiful landscape gardens" alongside Mito's Kairakuen and Okayama's Korakuen. The spacious grounds used to be the outer garden of Kanazawa Castle and were constructed by the ruling Maeda family over a period of nearly two centuries. Opened to the public in 1871, Kenrokuen features a variety of flowering trees which provide the garden with a different look for each season.
D. T. Suzuki Museum
The D.T. Suzuki Museum (鈴木大拙館, Suzuki Daisetsu Kan) is a small museum commemorating the life and works of Suzuki Daisetz Teitaro (1870-1966), a prominent Buddhist philosopher. The museum was opened in 2011 in the district of Kanazawa where Suzuki was born, a ten minute walk from Kenrokuen. On display are exhibitions showcasing the writings of D.T. Suzuki which allow the visitor to learn more about his life and philosophy. In addition, the architecture of the museum serves as an interpretation of D.T. Suzuki's life and religious scholarship; its use of clean, simple lines and open spaces causes visitors to pause and reflect.

Ms. Toshiko, Toshiko-san is a high level guide in Kanazawa area. She gave me a very well organized three hour tour of the samurai district in Kanazawa as well as the geisha district. She offered detailed description of the visited sites including their historical background. I was also very impressed and grateful for her readiness to answer my additional specific questions in our subsequent email exchanges. Her background seems to be very broad and deep. While I am a bit embarrassed to even mention this her English is superb. I recommend her highly.

Kanazawa is a wonderful experience. The Gardens were spectacular, very calming and spiritual. The castle alongside equally as impressive. Touring the Geisha district gave us the closest Japanese experience yet.

Akiko was wonder! We had three generations, grandma, mom and dad and two boys ages 9 and 12. She met us at the cruise terminal and we went by bus to the train station. We were going to take public transportation but opted for a mini van for three hours that cost an extra $130. Well worth the expense as we only had three ours in Kanazawa. We went to the Samarai Shrine, which was fantastic, everyone enjoyed it. Akiko accommodated us in every way, we even had our gold leaf ice cream- which is a must!
