Khor Virap
Although there are various historical landmarks in Armenia, the oldest and most well-known is probably the Biblical Mount Ararat. This is why our tour promises a spectacular view from the closest spot possible. Khor Virap monastery is located about an hour’s drive away from the capital Yerevan, and offers an amazing view of Armenia’s defining symbol – the majestic Ararat. “Khor Virap” translates as “deep dungeon”, and was built of the place of the former royal prison, located on the historical site of Artashat. It was this prison in which they kept Gregory the Illuminator, the first Armenian Catholicos, for a whole 13 years. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that this place is one of the most sacred spots for Armenians around the world. Likewise, it’s also the closest point to the Mount Ararat from Armenia; very often this spot becomes the number 1 reason to visit our country!
Noravank Monastery
Another place that can’t be missed is Noravank. It is one of the gems of medieval Armenian architecture, nestled high among the stunning brick-red cliffs in the end of the Gnishik Canyon. Here you will see the one and only depiction of God the Father in Armenia, which is just as astonishing as the face of Jesus Christ that appeared on the dome of the Church’s narthex. Built by Orbelian noblemen, it stands out among our churches as the sepulcher of this noble family, making it unique since it was absolutely prohibited to bury people inside a church since the 5th century.

Lovely day with seeing the monasteries, beautiful view of the Ararat! Tour guide was in a great mood and answered all our questions. Loved the explanations generally at the monuments. Wine tasting was a very quick thing so be prepared, but the enthusiasm of the owner made it fun and nearly everyone bought some of the pomegranate wine. Bus was comfortable and air conditioned. Very pleasant day.

What to say? Everything from this tour was top tier, from the explanations and the drive to the locations visited, the food and the increíble wine tasting. I wish I had more time in the country to do more tours with this company, but alas - at least I know who to hire for next time!

Our family recently took a day trip to explore some of the most fascinating sites in southern Armenia, and it turned out to be one of those experiences that stays with you long after the journey ends. The tour combined history, nature, and local culture in a way that made the entire day feel both relaxing and meaningful. Our first stop was the iconic Khor Virap. As we approached the monastery, the view of Mount Ararat slowly appeared through the morning haze. Seeing the snow capped mountain rising behind the monastery was breathtaking, and it instantly became one of the most memorable views of the trip. Walking around the monastery grounds with my family felt peaceful and reflective. We also visited the underground pit where Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned for years before converting Armenia to Christianity. The narrow ladder down into the chamber made the experience surprisingly emotional, and it gave us a deeper appreciation for Armenia’s long religious history. After that, we continued south toward the dramatic red cliffs that surround Noravank. The drive itself was beautiful, with winding roads cutting through rocky canyons and wide open landscapes. When we arrived, the monastery looked almost surreal against the towering cliffs. Walking up the steep stone steps of the Surb Astvatsatsin church was both exciting and slightly nerve wracking, but the views from the top were absolutely worth it. My family spent quite a bit of time simply enjoying the scenery and taking photos. The combination of medieval architecture and raw natural landscape made Noravank feel like a place frozen in time. Later in the afternoon we visited Birds' Cave near the village of Areni. The cave was fascinating because of its archaeological discoveries, including evidence of one of the world’s oldest known wineries and even ancient leather shoes. Walking inside the cave felt like stepping directly into ancient history. The cool air and dim lighting added to the mysterious atmosphere, and our guide explained how archaeologists uncovered artifacts dating back thousands of years. The day ended with something a little more relaxing: a wine tasting in the Areni region. We sampled several local wines made from the famous Areni grape variety, and it was a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring. Even the non wine drinkers in our family enjoyed the experience because the hosts explained the traditions of Armenian winemaking and how the region’s climate helps produce such unique flavors. What made the whole trip special was sharing it with my family. Between the historical stories, stunning landscapes, and moments of laughter during the wine tasting, the day felt full but never rushed. It was the kind of trip where every stop offered something different, and together they created a complete picture of Armenia’s culture and history. By the time we returned in the evening, we were tired but happy. Visiting Khor Virap, Noravank, and Birds’ Cave wasn’t just sightseeing; it felt like a journey through centuries of Armenian heritage, all experienced in a single unforgettable day. 🍷🏔️📸

This was our first tour in Armenia and it created a very good first impression of the country. Gayane's guiding style was commendable. She had a perfect balance in going back and forth between two languages, giving information in digestible chunks and keeping engaged with each guest. She also started giving us information as soon as we left the starting point, giving us a bit of a "city tour", somehow. In this sense, you get more than what you paid for. Arsen was a very professional driver who got us safely from one stop to another and back to the city. An excellent start to our stay in Armenia.
