Machame Route is rated as the most beautiful route on Mount Kilimanjaro and is also the most successful and popular hiking route which is referred as “Whiskey route” is more appealing to adventure-seeking hikers who also look for better scenery which are not on offer on Marangu. Machame Route is now by far the most popular route on the mountains and very few people know why it is alternatively known as the “Whiskey route.” The higher success rate and the fact that the route can be completed in 7 days reflect its popularity.

Distance: 11 km/7 miles Hiking Time: 5-7 hours Habitat: Rain Forest Drive to Machame gate from the hotel in Moshi after breakfast takes about 1 hour. The drive passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain. Leave the park gate after registration; walk through the dense rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge until we reach the Machame Camp (2,833m/9,350ft).

Distance: 5 km/3 miles Hiking Time: 4-6 hours Habitat: Heath After breakfast leave the glades of the rain forest and continue on an ascending path up to a steep, rocky ridge. On the Shira Plateau, the trail passes through heather and open moorlands, then cross a large river gorge to Shira Cave Camp.

Distance: 7 km/4 miles Hiking Time: 4-5 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert Lava Tower (4603m/15,190 ft) to Barranco Camp (3953m/13,044 ft) Distance: 3 km/2 miles Hiking Time: 2-3 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert After breakfast continue to the east up a ridge and then head southeast towards the Lava Tower – a 300 ft tall volcanic rock formation. After lunch descend down to Barranco Camp (3953m/13,044ft) through the strange but beautiful Senecio Forest to an altitude of 13,000 ft. The begin and end the day at the same elevation is not a problem, the time spent at higher altitude (Lava Tower) is very beneficial for acclimatization.

Distance: 5 km/3 miles Hiking Time: 4-5 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert The day starts by descending into the base of the Great Barranco Wall. Then from the base start climb the non-technical but steep, nearly 900 ft cliff. From the top of the Barranco Wall the trail cross hills and valleys until descend sharply into Karanga Valley (Karanga River) the last water point. Then start climb up to Karanga Camp, arrive there for lunch, later in the afternoon do a shorter acclimatization walk.

Distance: 4 km/2 miles Hiking Time: 4-5 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert From Karanga Camp the route passes the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail, continue up to the rocky section until Barafu Hut. At this point, you have completed the Southern Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Arrive at the camp, rest and followed by early dinner and prepare for the summit. When the weather gets clear, the view of two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo can seen her.

Distance: 5 km/3 miles Hiking Time: 7-8 hours Habitat: Arctic Uhuru Peak (5895m/19,341 ft) to Mweka Camp (3100m/10,065 ft) Distance: 12 km/7 miles Hiking Time: 4-6 hours Habitat: Rain Forest Start in the midnight begins the push to the summit, the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. The journey will be spending in the wind and cold weather. Ascend in the darkness for several hours while taking some short breaks. Arrive Stella Point (18,900 ft) at sunrise. Then from Stella Point continue to Uhuru Peak- the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro (Africa). Spend a short time on the summit taking photographs before start descent back to Barafu Camp, which takes about 3 hours. Arrive Barafu Camp, rest then wake up for a branch and continue descending down to Mweka Camp for dinner, wash, and overnight.

5.00An Unforgettable Adventure Climbing Kilimanjaro Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with Kiliwende Adventures was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that far exceeded all my expectations. The breathtaking views, diverse ecosystems, and the sheer sense of accomplishment make this hike truly unparalleled. Highlights: Scenery: From lush rainforests to alpine deserts, every step offered stunning and ever-changing landscapes. Reaching the summit was an awe-inspiring experience that I'll never forget. Challenge: This hike tested my limits, both physically and mentally. The high altitude and steep ascents were tough, the encouragement from our guides kept me going. My guides Bobby and Sadieh were incredibly knowledgeable and supportive. Their expertise ensured a safe journey, and their stories and insights added a rich cultural layer to the hike. Wildlife: Spotting unique flora and fauna along the way was a delightful bonus. Seeing animals like colobus monkeys and various bird species added to the adventure. Summit Success: Reaching Uhuru Peak was an emotional and triumphant moment. The sense of pride and accomplishment I felt standing at the roof of Africa is indescribable.

5.00The experience was amazing. John looked after everything for us on and off the mountain. Organising day trips, transport services and hire equipment. He even helped us with accomodation and travel for the next part of our journey! On the mountain the Killi Twende team were incredible. Ensuring we were well fed, rested and ready to go each day. Daily health check ups, consistent reminders to stay hydrated, encouragement and lots of singing ensured we made it to the summit! I will certainly be back again and will recommend Killi Twende to all who want to tackle Mt. Kilimanjaro!

5.00We chose this company on the recommendation of an experienced climber we knew who went to Kilimanjaro with them, and we didn't regret it. Service was high, great food, always the best places in camp. In the evening they even gave a hot warmer to keep the sleeper warm )))) The team is well trained, qualified. Never been late, responsible, honest. Take into account all customer requests, solve all problems. Thanks to experienced guides, even the weaker members of our expedition successfully reached the summit. They've got better value for money, and then we got more safari from them. Climbing Kili is the adventure of a lifetime, especially as we've travelled seven climatic zones - from the rainforest to the Arctic desert!

5.00Kilitwende team helped me to realize my dream to climb Kilimanjaro! I'm woman 57 years old and not a good climber. But the guides and porter did their best to make the trip comfortable and support me. It was really not camping but clamping! After trekking the team meet us with hot napkins and welcome drink. We had hot water to wash the hands and face and we had comfortable tents for sleeping and eating. Every day our chief cooked tasty dishes: soups, salads, chicken or fish, even pizza and pancakes in the mountains! We had fresh fruits every day that was delivered by porters. When I was about to give up our experienced guides Peter and Sadi inspired me and help to reach the summit! Kilitwende is really dream team!
