Chinese Fishing Nets
Chinese fishing nets(Cheena vala)are a type of stationary lift net in India. They are fishing nets that are fixed land installations for fishing. While commonly known as Chinese fishing nets in India, the more formal name for such nets is shore operated lift nets. Huge mechanical contrivances hold out horizontal nets of 20m or more across. Each structure is at least 10m high and comprises a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end which is operated by a team of up to six fishermen. While such nets are used throughout coastal southern China and Indochina, in India they are mostly found in the Indian cities of Kochi and Kollam, where they have become a tourist attraction. This way of fishing is unusual in India and almost unique to the area, as it was introduced by Chinese explorers who landed there in the 14th century. Indeed, one interpretation of city name Kochi is ‘co-chin', meaning like China

5.00We had a fantastic day in Cochin with Niyas. His English is excellent and he is very knowledgeable about the town. He showed us lots of local places and took us to a great local Biryani restaurant. We highly recommend a day tour with Niyas - 5 stars!

5.00I had an incredible time with my friend Nasru while I was in Kochi. He took us to the most amazing spots around town and had so much local knowledge. He’d wait just for us for hours outside our cruise ship or restaurants. And he even set our friends up with other tuk tuk drivers who were amazing. A friend of mine even forgot her wallet at a restaurant we visited and he quickly called the owner, and took us back and forth both ways no charge to retrieve it. I can confidently say that you will have an amazing experience if you choose to go on this tour. I will forever miss Nasru and his tuk tuk Ferrari!

5.00Big shout out for Shuhaib the best guide and tuk tuk driver in Cochin. We had an amazing day, he showed us all the sights and was very knowledgeable We finished the day feeling like we’d really experienced Cochin. Can’t praise this trip enough. He was waiting for us at the cruise port with my name on a card and made sure he got us back for the time we requested Would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting this part of India in the future

5.00Niyas is an excellent local guide and we enjoyed seeing Kochi in his Tuk Tuk. He went at our pace and he helped us find some art to buy as well as visiting several sites and shops with good humoured and gentle selling techniques. He also gave us some great restaurant recommendations. We used him for two days.
