Of all the scenic vistas of Kuala Lumpur, it is, perhaps, the railway station that surely captures the imagination of any foreign traveller. Standing like a confection of domes and minarets, clad in white as though iced for a feast, the station completed in 1911 under the aegis of the aforementioned A.B. Hubback – was the third to serve the city. Its style, Indo-Saracenic in flavour, evokes the romantic East as dreamt by empire-builders and Orientalists. One half expects a troupe of turbaned guards or the arrival of a princely Maharajah. Yet this station is more than fantasy – it has conveyed governors and sultans alike, and it was instrumental in breathing life into the economic arteries of the colonial Malaya. Today it remains an architectural delight – like a freshly-baked cake covered in buttercream icing in the midst of Kuala Lumpur’s urban sprawl.
Malayan Railway Administration Building
Across from the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station, the FMS Railway Administration Office was designed by Government Architect Arthur Benison Hubback. Construction began in 1914, three years after the station's completion, and finished in September 1917. It was one of Hubback's last government buildings and his final work in Kuala Lumpur before he left for England to fight in the First World War, never to return. Like the station, it reflects the Indo-Saracenic style, crowned by four large domes-the central dome with a cupola and three domes on staircase towers-plus four smaller domes. The three-storey façade features arcaded arches: pointed horseshoe arches with pilasters on the ground floor, semi-circular arches with triple columns on the first, and interlocked pointed arches above. The porte-cochère is flanked by minarets and small chhatris, while keyhole arches add ornamentation. Today, the building still serves as the headquarters of Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM).

5.00The guided tour with Ms Pritam was excellent and well worth the time. We met at the train station in the morning and enjoyed a wonderfully engaging trio into the historic past of old KL. The trip was unhurried and the route taken was easy to walk. Our guide was polite, engaging, witty and informative. Would highly recommend this trip to other travellers who have an interest in understanding and connecting historic and modern KL together.

5.00This is a well planned, unhurried and extremely interesting tour around the few remaining colonial buildings of KL. Every site is within walking distance and is reached thru travelling along the original access routes of this city. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, humorous and relaxed. It was a pleasure to be taken around by her. My 16 year old son also enjoyed the experience.

5.00My wife and I did a walking tour of Kuala Lumpur with Pritam and honestly had a great time. She knows the city well and shared loads of interesting stories and little details we would never have picked up on our own. The walk felt relaxed and easy, not rushed, and she was happy to chat and answer questions along the way. It felt more like exploring with a knowledgeable local than being on a formal tour. 5.00I had a marvelous walk through Kuala Lumpur’s colonial past with Pritam. Her passion and hospitality are exceptional—she had prepared for the tropical drizzle with a spare umbrella for me, and met me with a spare bottle of water. Her knowledge of the city’s heritage is solid, and she shares it with a verve that makes its history come alive. This walk was a highlight of my visit to KL, and a perfect match for my interest in the intersections of Indian and World and Colonial history. Malaysia’s colonial heritage is rich, and I thoroughly enjoyed it thanks to Pritam.
Charming and informative afternoon tour

5.00We really enjoyed our relaxed afternoon tour of the colonial centre of KL with Pritam. We met her by the old railway station and slowly made our way past the original site where the city was formed, saw the original market site and many colonial buildings in our time together. Pritam gave us a small pamphlet that showed our walking plan and summarised key points along the way which is a handy reference. She also carried old pictures and photographs of the buildings and areas we visited for historical reference. Pritam gave us great information on the architecture and design of the buildings and stories from their past. There was plenty of time to stop to take photos or to ask questions. The central market is a great place to finish up, Pritam made sure we knew how to get back to our hotel from there and then left us to enjoy its aircon, drinks, snacks and local souvenirs. We never would have found all the buildings by ourselves, nor have such a good understanding of their history. We also enjoyed this tour as it showed us an alternate, quieter side to the KL we had experienced up until that point (ie shopping centres and traffic). It is a hot and humid walk so be sure to wear a hat and sunscreen! We highly recommend this charming tour with Pritam as a great way to see the sights in the old colonial centre and learn about how KL was established.

The guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the city and the buildings we saw. It was a nice long walk but I ended the day knowing so much more about the city and people.
