At the Kyoto Shibori Museum, this traditional Japanese craft class shows you how to dye a 46cm x 180 cm silk georgette scarf using the Kyo-arashi shibori method. You'll end up with a beautiful silk scarf to serve as a souvenir of your trip to Kyoto. Classes are usually individual and take 30 minutes to 60 minutes per class.
Start by choosing your favorite color and learning how to fold your fabric in a particular way. Wrap a tube with the folded fabric and wind a string around it. Squish the fabric down to the bottom of the tube and dye it.
While your fabric is drying (about 30 minutes), you'll learn more about shibori. Browse art pieces, tools, and samples displayed in the museum.

At the Kyoto Shibori Museum, your Japanese craft class shows you how to dye a 70-inch x 17-inch (180cm x 44cm) silk scarf using the kyo-arashi shibori method. You'll end up with a beautiful scarf to serve as a souvenir of your trip to Kyoto. Classes are usually individual and take 30 minutes to 60 minutes per class. Start by learning how to fold your fabric in a particular way and wrapping a pipe in the fabric. Wind a string around the pipe and squish the fabric to the bottom of the pipe , and then dye your fabric with your favorite color. Unwind the string and roll your fabric with a towel, and press it. This experience was even better than I was expecting! I wanted to try my hand at shibori and have a nice souvenir to take home, but also received a personal tour of the museum with the family who has been passing this exceptional skill down through the generations. I highly recommend it!

A fun day and way to learn about a beautiful cultural art form. You'll be able to learn more of the many ways of intricate art of tying and dying in the museum after creating your own simple kyo-arashi shibori scarf.

This was so much fun. You got to choose what you wanted to dye - t-shirt, bag, noren, hanging. Then came the fun of deciding what picture to trace. There are many different designs and sizes of designs to choose from. You do a practice piece then start on your own design. You get instructions and help as you need it. I'd do it again. (For some reason, I was unable to upload photos of my t-shirt.)
