This workshop is unique because it lets you hand-craft your own wooden chopsticks in Kyoto’s historic Gion district, guided by a local artisan using traditional tools. Instead of simply watching a demonstration, you experience the full process yourself—choosing the wood, shaping it by hand, and finishing it into a practical, personal keepsake rooted in everyday Japanese culture.

Choose from a variety of beautiful types of wood, each with its own color, grain, and character. Whether you prefer a lighter or darker tone, or something in between, find the perfect wood to match your taste. Then, select your ideal length; short or long to create chopsticks that truly fit your hand. Once you've made your selections, place your chopsticks on the stand and use a hand plane to carefully carve them into shape. After carving, smooth the surface and edges with sandpaper to bring out the natural beauty and comfort of your chopsticks. Finally, apply a coat of natural oil to protect and enhance the finish, giving them a soft, polished look. As an optional touch, you can have your name engraved in Japanese or your native language, making your chopsticks truly one-of-a-kind.

The guy is racist at the counter talking on the phone saying gaijin! Never again will o offer my money to a place who doesn’t appreciate foreigners! And there’s an upcharge for it all so don’t trust it as cheap as it sounds. This place sucks!

Ray was super nice and fun to have as our guide. He explained the chopsticks making process simply and well. We had lots of fun conversations throughout our experience!
I came with a group of 4 and we all had a blast making our chopsticks!

There are multiple different wood types to choose from and you can get them engraved! We had Ray as our teacher and he did a great job teaching us how to shave our chopsticks. Would definitely come back!

This was an experience like no other. We had a personal teacher to show us how to make the chopsticks, and could choose from a variety of types of wood. Our teacher, Maria, was absolutely phenomenal and went above and beyond to make our experience worthwhile. I would absolutely recommend this experience to anyone (you don’t have to be a master woodworker, it’s a lot easier than I expected!). You come out with a new skill and an amazing souvenir. I can’t recommend this enough.

It was a lot of fun making them! The staff are super kind and helpful. It’s super good value for the price, you’re able to choose different wood as well as engrave them for a little extra. I went by myself, but it would probably be a really fun group activity! How better to remember your trip than by making your own chopsticks? Super fun! Highly recommend

Very enjoyable and calming experience. I enjoyed learning about the process. The staff is kind and friendly. We were guided by Nikko, who was very helpful and patient with us. I am so glad we attended! Highly recommend.
