I rarely go to a West End show with less than zero knowledge of what I'm about to see and given I'd picked up some bargain tickets in this stalls assumed that the audiences were voting with their feet and I shouldn't expect too much. Well, I'm delighted to say I was totally wrong and having just left the show was blown-away by the cast, music and production. Mark Addy in the title role was quite remarkable and the sheer physical and emotional effort he put in must be so hard to replicate every night and still feel genuine but somehow he managed to portray every nuance, the pain, the occasional joy and the distress of the journey (metaphorically and actually) he had been on. Jenna Russell who played Harold's wife was superb too and the standing ovation at the end was thoroughly deserved. I would point out that some will find this a very tough watch with some harrowing themes but for me, it was a wonderful surprise and a musical I won't forget any time soon.

We had already watched Passenger sing the songs, watched the movie, and this was just the icing on the cake. Better as we knew the story, and had already heard many of the songs.

Loved the book and the film, but wondered how such a tale could be successfully adapted to the stage. It was flawlessly done, the set simple but clever, with seamless flow between scenes. Mark Addy is outstanding in the role of Harold - he wrings out the full gamut of emotions from his audience….its a fun and uplifting show, but expect to do plenty of eye dabbing. The other stand out cast member for me was young Noah Mullins (the Balladeer), his voice and movements, hauntingly beautiful. He is perfectly cast here, and definitely a name I’ll watch out for. It was a packed house on our visit, the cast receiving a richly deserved standing ovation.

Excellent show brilliantly cast! Set and props were so well used and thought out. We loved the book and the film but were not sure how it would carry on stage. Far surpassed expectations! Would watch again!

I booked this without knowing anything about it (my friend had read the book) so had no idea what to expect. I'm so glad I took a chance - it's a beautiful show, wonderful cast and full of laughter and tears. We sat in the upper circle and the view was fabulous. Highly recommended.

Our daughter bought us tickets for this show for Christmas, knowing that we had enjoyed the book and film. We were not sure how it would adapt to the stage but were very pleased. Excellent songs were accompanied with wonderful performances for a very well chosen cast. If you are looking for an enjoyable new musical, book now!

Yesterday was a challenging day for myself and my wonderful daughter Sophie who not long 18, has been my primary carer for the best part of 3 years. I had an important meeting with my neurosurgeon following a procedure back in December and she came with me to help with my memory issues and to be there for me. The meeting was long and could not have gone much worse despite my expectations and knowledge that further 'corrective' surgery was required. Leaving somewhat bewildered just after 10am, I asked my daughter to see if we could find an interesting play to see while we were in London. I mentioned I had seen an interesting review in The Times a few days earlier about Harold Fry. We got rush tickets in a brilliant location in the stalls and we were both blown away by what unfolded in front of us. Before venturing to see the show I thought I might as well run up a massive bill on my credit card so took her for a lovely meal in Clos Maggiore in Covent Garden, a destination restaurant I had spent some decades finding the time to visit. The staff there seemed to have a sixth sense and treated us wonderfully well, even giving us free boxes of chocolates as we departed. The London Theatre was one I hadn't visited before and is tricky if, like me, your knees are shot and steps are an issue. The seats had good leg room, however, and I loved the patina of the decor inside - I hope they leave it as long as they can before they mess with it because it exudes authenticity. Authenticity was a big factor in the success and enjoyment of the play. There was a great balance between the spoken word and the songs. The storyline resonated perfectly with my my daughter and me , especially given our elevated emotional state. The quality of acting, singing and ensemble work was excellent and the principal actors were brilliantly cast. Much promise too for many of the ensemble. I loved the puppetry with the dog and the actors playing David, Harold and Maureen had great stage presence. I must be honest in saying it was a difficult and emotional watch for me given the bad news I had received just a few hours earlier, but it was not just me that was crying, everyone around us was crying and the packed audience rewarded the performers with a standing ovation that was truly deserved. I see a lot of theatre but very rarely do I see everyone in the audience standing and applauding like that. I have other shows and gigs I need to do before I go, but I would recommend this show to anyone who appreciates something a bit different with a great story line that never strayed into sentimentality. I truly hope this show attracts the audience it deserves and has a long and successful run. It was definitely better than the woke and cliched Hadestown and although very different, more rewarding than the very funny and highly entertaining Book of Mormon. It will be interesting to see if Hamilton can one-up it this evening.
