Quite possibly one of the best river trips in the country, the Lower Gauley offers some of the single biggest waves, gigantic holes and steep drops runnable by raft. The Lower Gauley serves up 55 rapids rated from class I-V, with most of them III or higher. With the help of a professional guide, you and your crew will tackle this whitewater fanatic’s favorite. It’s no wonder that guests flock from around the world to catch one of these 22 release dates. Delicious hot lunch included.

Adventures on the Gorge

Meet your rafting trip leader at the departure point. You will listen to a brief orientation and get your gear (personal flotation device, helmet and paddle). Then, you will have a 45-minute ride on a school bus down to the river put-in. Your guide will go over additional instructions once you get in the raft. A return shuttle with complimentary beverages brings you back to the resort.

Gauley River

The trip begins with a few smaller class I-III rapids as you ease into paddling and working as a team. Then, you hit some bigger rapids rated class IV-V. About half-way through the trip, you will pull over and eat a grilled hot riverside lunch on the shore. After lunch, you will continue downstream into some more booming whitewater. Here you’ll go through several rapids rated class III-V, like Koontz’s Flume and PSH. Between rapids, there is time for a swimmer’s rapid and maybe (based on water levels) jumping off of rocks. A return shuttle with complimentary beverages brings you back to the resort.

Had a wonderful trip down the Lower Gauley. Our guide, Tri, was outstanding and gave clear instructions throughout the trip, and entertained with many great stories from his rafting experience. Everyone we dealt with from Advertures on the Gorge was very friendly and helpful. The lunch was delicious. I highly recommend using Adventures on the Gorge for a rafting trip. They were extremely well run, professional, and courteous. It was just a perfect trip and day.

I actually did UPPER and LOWER Gauley but the option to click wasn’t there. Anyway, it matters because I FIRST want to compliment Le Femme Chef on the overnight camping because there’s nothing more By God West Virginia than that woman cooking for you, in the middle of the woods, by fire and candlelight! I have been all around the world, I’ve eaten at Michelin star restaurants. Words cannot describe how wonderful this woman’s food is! When you pair that with understanding how she has to prepare it all -your mind will be totally blown! I cannot imagine anyone ever being able to replace her. I’m not kidding. If AOTG doesn’t understand what she is… they have no business in the outdoor business! I’m absolutely going to complement Mogul Mike, Cosmo, and Patty as well. Perhaps one could argue that I saved the best for last! But I know Mike would want me to put La Femme Chef first. I’m blanking on her name. She’s the sweetest thing ever!

The guide(s) are a big part of the experience. In the Spring of 2024, we were laughing from the bus ride to the water and back to the resort. Our guide this year, Steve, did not match our expectations. We realize the importance of following ORDERS, but we were not expecting to be scolded. Felt as if we were responsible for his shortcomings. Hope he improves, but if possible, you may want a more people friendly guide.

One of the best experiences that I ever had 😊 Scott was our rafting instructor and he was amazing. I was alone but people who I were with in our boat, were amazing and fun. I drove 7 hours in rain and fog just to do this and for sure it was worth it ❤️ The experience and the food all were amazing. I definately will do the marathon one next year. I highly suggest them to whoever loves adventure and adrenalin release ❤️❤️❤️

We took the all day Lower Gauley Trip. Class 3/4 rapids. Great fun. Good learning experience. Our guide, Trey Roberts, was very knowledgeable and professional.

The guide was great! We expected the water to be a bit warmer than it was but it wasn't too bad! The resort provided us with gear that would keep you semi dry so it ended up not being a problem.

Upon arriving at the lodge/check in we were really happy with the appearance of the grounds and buildings. Everything was up to date and really well taken care of. I would describe it as very rustic luxury. Our cabin was clean but did have a minor issue. There was no actual grill which was listed on the provided amenities, in replacement they have a grate over the fire pit. Not exactly what we wanted but we made it work. Could have used a few more pans of different sizes. Our bed was really squeaky, to the point it woke up others when we would get out of bed. The guide was really good, though seemed a little put off ish and cocky. I think the staff on the grounds was fantastic. The views from base camp are unmatched. Speaking of base camp there are a lot of things to do and you will not be bored. We didn't try any of the food but I had heard good things from others. We will be back again next year to try our hand at the Upper portion.
Whitewater Rafting at Adventures on the Gorge...definitely do it!

My husband and I had an outstanding time rafting the Lower Gauley!!! Justin Everette was our guide. He was terrific: personable & good at what he does, just a really great guide :-). My husband wants to go back and do the Upper Gauley next year (gulp, lol). We would definitely ask for Everette again. In the past we have rafted the Lower New River, also through Adventures on the Gorge, which was also so much fun. If you're debating whether or not to try whitewater rafting, definitely try it.

This place offers a great experience for white water rafting. The company has experienced guides who truly look out for your safety. Our guide Scott made our experience a memorable one. We stayed in the Sunny Side hotel like cabins. Its well worth the money for the comfort level they provide. Rafting trip was an all day event and it is well run and goes very smoothly. The on site restaurants provide good food at a fair price. The staff are all a friendly helpful group of people. Thanks Scott you truly rock.
