I was on my way to Sao Tome and the cheapest way was on TAAG Angolan airlines from Lisbon. When i booked the flight i just had just 3 hours in Luanda, but, as often seems to happen, 3 days before leaving, i was informed this had been changed to an 11 hour layover. However, instead of getting in a snit and writing a strongly worded letter to the airline, i decided to just go with the flow, and booked this trip....what larks. The first thing i have to advise everyone who is in this position, as you may not be aware, i certainly wasnt, but Luanda has 2 airports, the 4th Fevereiro which is really close to the city, and a giant, new one, Antonio Agostinho Neto which is 50km outside the main city. Im sure you can guess which one my flight from Lisbon arrived in, and which one the guide thought i was flying into. However, we sorted that out, and for a mere $30 US extra, he came and picked me up, and dropped me back at the huge new airport almost 2 hours drive away. Woop Woop. So...my friends all think im mad doing these trips as a solo 64 year old woman, but, honestly, ive done these layover things all over the world, and the only difference with Luanda, is that i decided not to do it alone, and booked this because i was travelling hand luggage only, as i do, so had everything with me. I also had come off 3 flights, one of which was overnight, and i couldnt be bothered with the hassle of deciding where to go and how to get there. Best decision. The guide and the driver were young Angolan men, and they were delightful, informative, friendly and interesting. We went to the slavery museum which was really interesting (in a really horrible, sad way) because, while we all know about the kidnap and removal of African people from Ghana and Senegal, i had no idea how many people were also stolen from so much further south. The experience was, however, lightened by a deluge of local school children visiting the museum, who listened to their teachers, and were so well behaved it just blew my mind compared to kids at home. We also visited the fort of San Miguel, drove along the corniche, did a bit of shopping (i was so glad that i couldnt really buy anything as i still had 3 countries to go and carry-on only...i could have spent a fortune in the markets), had coffee and just cruised around town. It was very laid back and i loved every minute. Ideal city trip for a layover, and i really recommend this. Honestly, who has ever said to you...'Luanda is on my bucket list'...no one right. But actually its a pretty cool city with beautiful beaches, cool architecture and a lot of history, however uncomfortable that might be for us Europeans. If you have the opportunity, i really recommend this tour.

With just one full day in Luanda, Angola I needed to find a way to explore as much as possible in this city and I picked the perfect tour for that task here with this Luanda City Tour. The tour started when my guide, Danny, picked me up from my hotel at 9 am and ended when he dropped me back off a little bit after 2 pm. I got to visit and explore many notable spots in and around Luanda including the Miradauro de Lua, The National Slavery Museum - Museu Nacionalda Escravatuta, Craft market - Mercado do Artesanato, the Fortress of Sao Miguel, and more. I got to see a lot and learn a lot about Luanda, and Angola in general, so a big thank you to Danny for doing a great job being my tour guide today. If you’re looking for a way to explore Luanda in one day definitely consider booking this tour, I highly recommend it ! - Nolan

First of all, I want to clarify that I do not like to give bad opinions because I think that you always get a good thing from every visit, but in this case I will make an exception. We booked this city tour for Thursday 25/09 (contracted more than a month in advance). To our surprise, and after starting the tour, when we saw that the driver had not only emitted no sound but also only answered "yes" or "no" to each of our questions (and to the question "how many inhabitants Angola has, he replied "I should check it because I don't know"), we realized that the Luzaya Enterprise had only sent a driver and not a tour guide; therefore it was only a Taxi Service that took us from one place to another without any explanation. We started with a trip of more than 50 minutes to the Slavery Museum (I never made it clear that it was far away, so we went the whole trip in silence). We arrived, entered and left (we never knew what happened in that place or what it was for), then we took a boat ride, crossed to an island (we never knew the name) where we ended up seeing the rooms of a resort as if we were going to stay... (???). When we told him we were wasting our time we went back to dry land and followed the journey in silence, visited a viewpoint, a mausoleum, a museum that was closed and so... finally we asked the driver to return us to our hotel because we kept going around without knowing anything about Luanda and the country. The truth is a waste of time and money. I think the visit with a speaking guide would have been more than interesting, but it wasn't the case... very bad organization of Luzaya.

The day began in the most anticipated place that was the moon mirror. Really amazing and wonderful. The guide showed me and explained a lot about the geological formations and the trees. I could see from close several baobabs and cactuses. Walked the road next to the savannah and was unforgettable. I loved it! Then I met Luanda and I was able to compare crafts. Super Indico!

It is a good drive back to the city with a very friendly and curious guide. Recommended! Although I wish it was a walking part since you don't get out of the car almost.
