Kasamori Inari Shrine
Hidden among the tall modern buildings in downtown Matsumoto City, Kasamori Inari Shrine is dedicated to Inari, a deity of the rice harvest and prosperity in business. The shrine stands alongside Jorinji Temple, fronted by a wooden gate constructed during the Edo period over 200 years ago. This gate is considered the oldest wooden gate in Matsumoto. On your way to Matsumoto Castle, stop by the Kasamori Inari’s hidden shrine and catch a glimpse of two traditions, Shinto and Buddhism living in harmony.
Matsumoto Castle
Matsumoto Castle is one of five castles designated as ‘National Treasures of Japan’ and the oldest castle donjon remaining in Japan. Construction began in 1592 of the elegant black and white structure with its three turrets. Because of the elegant black walls, Matsumoto Castle is sometimes called ‘Crow Castle’. Please note that the stairs to reach the top of Matsumoto Castle’s tower are steep and narrow.

When we met our Japanese guide at the train station we had the added bonus of his English colleague to accompany us on the tour. Although it was raining, both guides impressed us with their air of confidence and enthusiasm for the planned tour. We had a great walking tour that took in the castle and lots of other various sights and locations across central Matsumoto. The highlight was Masumoto Castle with the added bonus of the English guide being a member of the “Matsomoto Castle Gun Corps” so his intimate knowledge of the castle and weapons displays was extensive. After a great lunch of local buckwheat dumplings we continued the tour, with shopping tips etc. being given as we walked and then stopping at numerous locations where of the historical, cultural and religious significance of the site was explained to us. The tour gave us the confidence to head out and explore on our own and we would recommend this tour as an introduction to Matsumoto. Lyle and Linda Bell. Perth, Australia.

We enjoyed a relaxed exploratory tour of Matsumoto today. Our awesome guide was Sylvain who walked with us for over 6 hours, guiding us through the beautiful streets of Matsumoto, exploring the old and new areas, walking down the frog alley, having coffee at his local special place. We lunched at a soba noodle house and went on to explore the Matsumoto castle, climbing floor by floor, looking at the samurai armory and guns used in the past 200 years. Matsumoto is a gem in Japan. Well worth a visit. Thank you Sylvain.
