Haleakala is known for rapidly changing weather conditions and dense clouds and rain are common. As a result, clear viewing of the sunrise is not guaranteed, and the tour operates rain or shine. Refunds will be granted only when the tour is cancelled for safety reasons.
The high altitude at the summit area may complicate health conditions and breathing difficulties. Elderly visitors, pregnant women, young children, and those with respiratory or heart conditions should consult their doctor prior to touring. Walk slowly and drink water to avoid dehydration. If you have gone scuba diving, you should wait at least 72 hours before going on this tour.

We really enjoyed seeing the sunrise on Haleakala! Our guide Preston was great and gave us a lot of information with a fair amount of humor. The breakfast afterward was excellent. Be warned: it’s very cold and windy up there! I’m guessing the wind chill was down in the 20s F, so dress appropriately. It’s worth it!

Had a great time at this trip. Very very cold so layer up for sure. Gloves jackets etc. But so worth it. Beautiful once in a lifetime experience. Our tour guide Preston was so nice. Guided us, kept us engaged, and was so helpful. He even made sure we get back when we feel too cold and provided hot drinks to warm us back up.

Our tour guide, Preston, prepared us well for our experience. He provided snacks and hot beverages. He let us on the way up, and on our way down from Haleakala, Preston gave us information about the area. While he prepared us well for the weather, the suggestions from the tour company did not provide adequate information. For us, the air temperature was 49 F, but the 45 mph winds, altitude and rain made it feel much colder (think 20's). As suggested, layers of clothing are needed, but a warm coat is also needed. Hat and gloves were a must. A rain poncho could be used as protection against the precipitation, along with a warm coat. In our experience, hand and foot warmers were helpful! That said, it was the experience of a lifetime. Clouds rolled in and out across the crater, but we were surprised with clearing at the moment of sunrise. Good views of the crater appeared after sunrise and rainbows in the opposite direction. Excellent!

Preston was an amazing guide. I’ve done the Haleakala sunrise tour 4 times and he was the best driver/guide. Experience is different every time but there is one constant - it is cold and can be very windy and wet. Need to wear layers (winter gear) as well as a wool hat and gloves. Your outer layer should be waterproof as you may be standing in a cloud!

It was incredible! The view of the sunrise above the clouds-overlooking a crater is priceless. Our guide was amazing, narrating the history, culture and sights of Maui -as well as the crater and experience. Seeing the ranches, coffee and citrus groves and touring a historic sugarcane plantation for breakfast made the trip truly memorable.

Our driver Preston was fantastic. We really enjoyed the tour that much more because of him. He was great! Definitely make sure to bring layers as temperatures can get to 20 degrees up there. You can always leave any extras in the bus if need be but better safe and warm than sorry and cold.
