Cap Malheureux
⛪ Red Roof Church – Notre-Dame Auxiliatrice de Cap Malheureux Perched at the northernmost tip of Mauritius, the Red Roof Church is one of the island’s most iconic and photographed landmarks. Officially named Notre-Dame Auxiliatrice, this charming Roman Catholic chapel is instantly recognizable by its vibrant red sloping roof, set against a backdrop of turquoise sea, volcanic rocks, and lush greenery. Built in 1938, the church was dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Help and remains an active place of worship for the local fishing community. Its peaceful setting in Cap Malheureux, a quiet coastal village, contrasts beautifully with the dramatic name of the area, which translates to “Cape of Misfortune”—a reference to the many shipwrecks and the historic British landing in 1810 that marked the end of French colonial rule.

Experience wasn’t as advertised. We got driven to a few places that weren’t listed, including a tea factory where a saleswoman tried to flog us some tea We didn’t get to roam around Port Louis for 2hrs like we assumed we would, instead we were driven to a couple of places and escorted around the town centre for a short time Also because of these additional stops we only got 1hour in the botanical gardens

It is illegal to swim with turtles in Mauritius, we only found out when we got to the island and surprised a reputable company as Viator offers this. As such this element of the experience was a little tainted. We also had 2 stops which were not on the agenda (rum and tea tasting) which was fine but felt pressured by the companies concerned to buy, which we could do without. Apart from this the trip covered the main points of interest. Would have been better if we had a guide who provided information about the places we visited.
