The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary into Heavens (Spanish: Catedral Metropolitana de la Asunción de la Santísima Virgen María a los cielos) is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mexico. It is situated atop the former Aztec sacred precinct near the Templo Mayor on the northern side of the Plaza de la Constitución (Zócalo) in Downtown Mexico City. The cathedral was built in sections from 1573 to 1813 around the original church that was constructed soon after the Spanish conquest of Tenochtitlan, eventually replacing it entirely. Its design is a mixture of three architectural styles that predominated during the colonial period, Renaissance, Baroque and Neo-classic.

1.00A Huge dissapointment! This guide knew absolutely nothing about murals in Mexico. We had to insist that we pay the museum fee and look at the murals in the palace of fine arts.. but he walked away while we looked and had nothing to say. Also he had no information a out the pyramids except to point out over and over that parts were “reconstructed”. Buzz kill
