Experience the magic of being carried by the wind, just as Peter Puget was when he mapped these waters back in 1792. From Seattle’s Shilshole Bay Marina we sail west across Puget Sound toward the magnificent Olympic Mountains. Along the way we will watch for orcas, schools of our local porpoises, sea lions, harbor seals, bald eagles, great blue herons, and other wildlife. On the Sunset Cruise, we’ll enjoy the light show as the sun drops behind the well-named Mount Olympus and other peaks in the Olympic Range and illuminates feathery horizon clouds into glorious colors.

Captain Grant, who holds a 100-ton Master of Inland Waters License from the U.S. Coast Guard, is dedicated to sharing the joy of being on the water with others. A former reporter for the Seattle Times, former Science and Medical writer for the Associated Press, and author of four books (one of which was named one of the year’s 10 Best nonfiction books by the American Library Association) Grant is a natural story teller.

Golden Gardens Park

On the way out of the marina, enjoy the view of more than 1,800 yachts as we then pass by Seattle's favorite saltwater park Golden Gardens as we set sail, heading west across Puget Sound.

To the south, we will sail past Discovery Park with its historic West Point Lighthouse, which has protected ships from shoal waters while entering Seattle since 1881.

Amazing service from Captain Grant! It was so beautiful to see the sunset. He made sure we had a great time, and even tried to help us see the wildlife. Luckily for us, there were plenty of seals waiting for us to say hi! Will definitely be back, made us feel very comfortable and right at home on his boat. Thanks Grant!

Captain Grant welcomed our group aboard with a true sense of hospitality. We sailed the calm waters of Puget Sound, spotting seals and jumping salmon as the late August sun set behind us. This experience was probably my favorite of the summer. Captain Grant’s expertise and joy for sailing was evident from the moment he introduced himself. He made sure each of us had a chance at the helm and was sure to point out the features of the beautiful Puget Sound. As the evening came to a close, we all agreed that if we ever had family or friends in town, we’d absolutely take them up to sail with Captain Grant.

Yesterday, my wife and I had the absolute pleasure of taking a 2-hour sunset sailing trip aboard a beautiful 35-foot sailboat with Grant, the captain and owner. From start to finish, the entire experience was unforgettable. Grant welcomed us aboard with genuine warmth and instantly made us feel comfortable. His knowledge of sailing and the Puget Sound was impressive, and he shared so many stories! The boat itself was very well maintained, offering plenty of space to relax and take in the views. As we sailed, the Sound was calm, the air fresh, and the evening light absolutely magical due to the wildfire smoke in the horizon. We watched the sun slowly dip behind the Olympic Mountains, painting the sky in shades of gold, pink, and deep yellow. So... back to Grant! He was the perfect host—attentive without being intrusive, always making sure we had the best vantage point for photos and the most comfortable spot to enjoy the scenery. His passion for sailing and love of the water was contagious, and it added a special energy to the entire trip. If you’re looking for a truly memorable way to experience the beauty of the Puget Sound, I cannot recommend Grant enough. It was simply perfect!

Grant was THE best, and I truly mean the BEST captain we could have asked for. Grant allowed me to book the entire sailboat for my boyfriend’s birthday (as a surprise) and Grant made our experience nothing less than wonderful. Grant was so knowledgeable and informative. He made us feel so safe and so calm when I expressed my nerves about boats at first! lol. Grant was a huge part of our trip as the memories we made alongside him are some we will cherish forever! Thank you so much Grant. We will see you and Sparkles next year! 😊

Grant is an amazing captain who instills confidence in his crew. He gives everyone, from the first time sailer to the seasoned old salt, an opportunity to grow in this sailing adventure. He is calm, patient and enthusiastic about sailing. He has made multiple accommodations to his sailboat to ensure safety and comfort from high side rails to cushioned seats, he even installed two seats by the mast to give his guests a better view. I highly recommend sailing with Grant. It was the highlight of our trip to Seattle.

We had a marvelous time, my crewmate and new friend, Monica, summarized it as we docked when she said “ I think we have made memories for a lifetime”. The weather was perfect, the dolphins and seals put in a great show while a cruise ship on the way to Alaska provided an interesting site. But the best part of the trip was our captain, Grant, a kind and gracious soul who let each of us take the wheel and made us feel like we were born sailors. He answered every question and provided interesting conversation with the sites of the sound as background and appeared to effortlessly sail his boat. Oh and did I mention he took pics! I have taken day sailing trips from Alaska to Europe to the Caribbean, my new friend Monica was right about this trip we made memories.

Definitely a great time - highly recommend! Grant's attentiveness to the details makes this the best value. Wildlife surprises, opportunity to drive the boat, comfort offerings of jackets and refreshments, WOW. Highlight of our trip.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed taking this sailboat cruise around the Puget. We saw a bunch of dolphins, seals, and jellyfish. There were even two cruise ships that left Seattle, which were great to see how big those ships are. Grant was a great captain and very friendly and laidback. He answered all of our questions and also enjoyed the peacefulness of being out on the water. Highly recommend, you will enjoy this trip!
