Create an art piece that can decorate your room with a gentle light! In this workshop, you will create An Origami lamp and Mizuhiki knot belt.
LED light passes through washi paper, gently lighting up the space with a very soft light. It brings pressure to both the eyes and the heart.
You will fold and glue several sheets of handmade washi paper in a bellows-like manner. Inserting a small lamp inside the bellows-like washi paper, the ramp shines with gentle and warm light. Additionally, you will create a mizuhiki knot ornament for the belt. At the end of the session, we offer Japanese sweets with "Japanese paper tea" that is not offered elsewhere.
Enjoy the beauty and potential of washi paper by making your art piece.
Please be informed that this workshop requires detailed skills that may not be suitable for young children. If you are looking for a family activity, we recommend "Private Workshop to Create Paper Last for 1,000 years in Ueno".

Experience the Japanese tradition and create your own artworks! We'll introduce the basics of washi paper with a guide document. An Origami lamp is created by folding and gluing together several sheets of handmade washi paper in a bellows-like manner. Inserting a small lamp inside the bellows-like washi paper, the ramp shines with gentle and warm light. When you close the bellows shape, the shape will look like a closed book. Additionally, you will create a mizuhiki knot (paper strings) ornament for the belt. At the end, you will have your one and only Origami lump. At the end of the session, we offer Japanese sweets with "Japanese paper tea" that is not offered elsewhere! “Mizuhiki” is a traditional paper cord, with a core of twisted washi paper, wrapped by nylon or film, making it a very decorative cord. Did you know each knot has meanings? Knowing the meaning of knots makes them perfect for gifts. Because washi is light and durable, it is perfect for art pieces and interior decor. Let’s learn about the Japanese traditional crafts and its skills to create your own original art piece. This workshop is not suitable for young children due to the detailed work required.

This was truly one of the best activities I did while in Tokyo. If you enjoy making crafts then this will be the perfect activity. It was relaxing, enjoyable and I felt so happy and proud creating a gift, souvenir, and memory. The instruction was funny, patient, passionate about her craft and such a pleasure to have spent time with during my stay. I would definitely recommend this to young and old and would definitely go back to do it again!!

Such a relaxing way to spend the afternoon, out of the heat and getting hands on! Project materials were well prepared ahead of time and all instructions were clear, making it a seamless experience putting together the two crafts.

Excellent experience if you have a couple of hours in Ueno/Asakusa area. You can make a beautiful mini lantern that well-thought-out for travelers (easy to take it home!) and learn Mizuhiki craft. Kozo tea and a sweet are good, too. Highly recommend for people who want to step away from tourists packed streets, learn little Japanese crafts, and good conversation over refreshing tea.

This experience was so much fun! Ms Shinoda guided us through making an origami lamp and a mizuhiki belt for the lamp and they turned out so beautifully. Her "paper tea" and snacks were delicious, too. I can't wait to visit again!

We had a really wonderful time learning about paper-making, origami, and mizuhiki! Over the course of an hour or two, we were able to produce a beautiful origami lamp that we will treasure for years to come. Kaho Shinoda was patient, kind, and impressively talented teacher and artist. I would absolutely recommend any workshop offered by Washi Labo Tokyo. I fully intend to see what workshops we could take the next time we are in Tokyo.
