Mont-Saint-Michel
We will first drive 1h30 to Mont-Saint-Michel. Mont Saint Michel is the most visited site in Normandy and one of the most visited sites in France. The first construction on the rock was built in 708. A few decades later, it became a major pilgrimage site for all Christians in the world. Thanks to the work of the religious community on the Mont, the site was seen as an intellectual reference in Europe where thousands of books, manuscripts and charters were written. In the 19th century, the importance of Mont Saint Michel was in decline and it became a prison after the French Revolution in 1789. From 1793 until 1863, the site had the worst reputation and was nicknamed the Bastille of the seas… The building suffered from the lack of maintenance during that time and almost disappeared after the French stopped using it as a prison. Fortunately, it was saved from destruction and many architects renovated it from then until present day. After the visit, we will drive back to Bayeux 1h30 .

Corrine was our guide. She was great. Very encouraging to the group because those steps could be intimidating! Thankfully the steps aren't done in a single run!! The monument speaks to the ingenuity of humans. Several times during the day we asked WHY and HOW. According to history it's a story of faith and obedience. WOW. Corrine also took the time to point out places to eat - listen to her! Letting someone else drive allows you to study the French countryside, not be worried about meeting your tour or being exhausted during the return trip. Take the trip with Corrine. I just wish she could have turned off the rain while we climbed. 🙂

Corrin (I hope I have her name correct) was excellent. She gave us an excellent tour to Mont St. Michel starting in Bayeux. She was so knowledgeable and patient with our small group of 8. I would highly recommend this tour. It’s a long day but very worth it! Leave by 8:00 and back by 16:00.

It was a wonderful day. The ride to Mont-Michel was pleasant and I learned a lot from our tour guide. It turned out that my daughter and I were the only ones on the tour so it was very personalized.

Getting to the abbey requires walking on a crowded, narrow street and climbing approximately 300 steps. Well worth the effort though!
