Lemosho Route:
The Lemosho Route is widely considered to be the best route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Not too long ago, there were only two main routes used to climb Kilimanjaro – the Marangu (Coca Cola) route and the Machame (Whiskey) route. Lemosho, a relatively new route, is preferred by reputable operators due to its beauty, remoteness and success rate. In short, it maximizes the chances that a climber will reach the summit, and enjoy the experience overall. The Lemosho route can be done in as little as six days (five nights) on the mountain.
However, it is ideally tackled over eight days (seven nights) for a better altitude acclimatization schedule. The trek begins at Londorossi Gate, located in the western base of mountain, within its lush, fertile rainforest. The route heads across the Shira Plateau, before circling along the southern circuit halfway around the mountain, exposing the climber to great views from all angles.

Today you will cover a lot of ground as you trek across a plateau of grassy moorland and heather scattered with volcanic rock formations. We will trek through Shira 1 Camp from where there are often views of Kibo Peak floating on the clouds as we head towards our destination which is Shira 2. We gain a reasonable amount of altitude as we head towards Shira 1 and parts of the route are fairly steep. As you proceed towards Shira 2 you will get the chance to view the Northern Ice fields from the western side of the mountain with some unusual views of Kibo. Our steady climb across the moorland of the Shira Plateau will help with acclimatization and we enjoy great panoramic views.

Your trek starts with an ascent with far-reaching panoramic views, walking in to the climatic zone of the upland desert and on the lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. You will reach the distinct pinnacle of the Lava Tower (4640 m), our high point for the day and a great place to enjoy your lunch. In the afternoon we make a steep descent to our camp for the night, located in the base of the Great Barranco Valley (3960 m), sheltered by towering cliffs but with extensive views of the plains below.

Our day starts by descending into the start of the Great Barranco, a huge ravine. We then exit steeply, up the Great Barranco Wall, which divides us from the southeastern slopes of Kibo. It’s a climb over rock, not technical but long and tiring. Passing underneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, we head towards the Karanga valley. From here we have a steep climb up from Karanga valley to our night’s camp at Karanga camp, set at 3963m. For those feeling strong we will go for a mid-afternoon acclimatization trek up to around 4200m before descending back to camp for the night.

After a good night’s rest and breakfast, we set off on our walk to Barafu camp at 4640m. The climb will take us across desolate scree slopes with no vegetation around us at all. It’s a tough steep walk made more difficult by the altitude. On arriving at camp we eat and spend the afternoon resting as we prepare for a long night and day ahead. It is important to keep hydrated and warm. We have an early dinner and then try to get some sleep as we will be getting up at between 11pm and 12pm to start the climb to the summit.

We start off at around midnight, and walk steeply upwards to the summit glaciers. We will be climbing scree for 4 to 5 hours but gain incredible height over a short distance. The views are spectacular. We should be on the crater rim at Stella Point (5739m) as the first rays of the sun hit us. Spectacular ice cliffs within the crater surround us and the views to jagged Mawenzi peak and beyond are breathtaking. Another hour’s walking takes us to the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895m). We begin our descent by returning to Stella Point and then descending on scree slope and track back to Barafu Camp for breakfast, before finally heading down to Millennium Camp for a long well-earned rest.

I had an excellent experience climbing for 7 days Lemosho route in March 2021 with Exceed Expectations Tours team. I contacted this agency and found them very helpful also very flexible as I was unsure of my climbing dates. Oscar told me about his company and I was glad to read other previously clients outstanding reviews from trip-advisor. The cooker, waiter, and porters all did an amazing job. It truly a group effort. The food was better than many restaurants I have eaten across the nations and the equipment was in great condition. We did find certain phases of the climb quite challenging, but every staff member were always willing to help in their own way, by being patient and allowing us to rest, temporarily lightening the load of our day-packs, helping us to stay hydrated. I truly believe that Exceed Tours team is the best among climbing company and they will do everything possible to offer a positive experience and make your trip unforgettable one.

It’s a great choice especially when you travel to Africa. The route is great and they were nice many moments for 9 days at Kilimanjaro. We spoke to a lot of agencies before found Exceed Expectations Tours on TripAdvisor forum, and i have to admit they were a right choice for us! Our guide have decades of experience in trekking Kili, he was a great help for our achievement. Our porters and guide were passionate and very helpful throughout, truth to be told they are Center of entire adventure. Me and 6 friends went on this adventure together and thoroughly enjoyed it very much. My advice for other climbers will be about timing to climb Kilimanjaro, the great season to trek will be July to December before the snow fall. You can also trek in winter time provided you have a proper accessories. However, I do not recommend trekking in rainy season. I think Lemosho Route should be in the bucket list of any kili climber lover. Thanks Exceed Expectations Tours, you real exceeded our expectations!😍

It was an unusual hour of climbing, dynamic and interesting, it’s not like a slow leg stops under the manuals from the pole-pole guides of Exceed Expectations Tours, but quite an active action by legs and hands. It’s getting cold here, here’s a stretch, and here’s a leg stronger to kick it was very interesting part of the route. Later on we reached at Karanga Camp, and it gave us this great view of the city of Moshi below us we stay there for one more day. I remember standing at the rock ‘cellphone rock’ I’m calling it that because there was reception here, so people kept scrambling up to text their loved ones that they’re fine. After overcoming the wall, we reach at Uhuru peak point and up there we rejoiced, laughed and joking with this hour of adventure. Couldn’t have done it without the help of mazing guys, what a bunch of people, porters, guides who literary risked there are life to help us live our dreams. Special thanks to this amazing team from this professional company which am so sure you will be fine too when you summit Kilimanjaro with them. I wish to see you some other time and definitely was amazing adventure and you’re missed already.

After travelling for the past 4 years, I finally got to share a bucket list moment with my partner in adventure at the roof of Africa. A life experience that’s worth all the blood sweat and tears. The temperature of the air in this region of Africa is more than comfortable, in general the conditions are maximum close to the perfect. In the forest of Kilimanjaro via Marangu Route we climbed through it until we got to the top, there were monkeys swinging from branches and songs heard from miles away in the silent forest, sung by porters carrying packs of supplies to camps above. Here’s one taking a break. Each and every porter on this mountain met me with a smile and Kiswahili greeting, despite their far more difficult job than mine. We went for a 3 Days Safari Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti National Parks after climbing Kilimanjaro, waking up and having wild elephants walking around your camp in the Serengeti national park was amazing, I realize Africa had such a beautiful and diverse great place to be in the world. This will be one of our biggest trips to date, What a fantastic 10 days it has been, filled with dramatic vistas, stunning sunrise and sunsets, and an action packed safari. A big thank you to our wonderful mountain and safari family @Exceed Expectations Tours for supporting us all the way to the Roof of Africa.
