Oshino Hakkai
Oshino Hakkai are the eight springs found in Oshino, Yamanashi, Japan. The aquifer water from Mount Fuji comes out to the ground to form these springs. They are a Natural monument of Japan, part of the Mount Fuji World Heritage Site. Winter offers a particularly stunning vista of the iconic mountain. That vista is the striking “Diamond Fuji” phenomenon, which can only be seen from certain places due to the position of the Earth. Diamond Fuji is when the rising or setting sun aligns perfectly with the peak of Mt. Fuji, as though the caldera is cupping the sun. A small open-air museum, the Hannoki Bayashi Shiryokan, surrounds the largest pond. A small admission fee is required. The water in the Waku Pond is especially clear and clean, and visitors are encouraged to drink it and even take some home in a bottle. It’s a great place to buy gifts and souvenirs, street food is amazing as well.
Mt. Fuji 5th Station
The highest peak of Mt Fuji (2200m) that is accessible by car, interesting for the hikers. This is the closest point to view the top of Mt fuji. You can have a splendor view of the city from the view points. P.S The station is reached by the Fuji Subaru Line, a scenic toll road up Mount Fuji's lower northern slopes, that begins in Fujikawaguchiko Town. The toll road costs 2100 yen and may temporarily get partially closed in winter in times of heavy snow. Furthermore, the road is closed to private vehicles during most of the climbing season (July 5 to September 10, 2024), during which shuttle buses operate between designated parking lots at the base of the mountain and the 5th station.

Fuji rewarded me with a clear view in the morning! I chose a Saturday tour which meant heavy traffic, but Hassan, my driver and guide, manoeuvred us skillfully to our various points of interest. Lots of opportunities for photos and walking about the various shrines. The cherry blossoms were in bloom which made for great photos. Lunch was at a very interesting noodle house, good food and a seemingly chaotic atmosphere. This was my first solo tour, but I felt quite safe throughout. The Shinto shrine in the forest was a wonderful bonus, and I did not go out on a boat tour on the lake, as it was quite cool by that point. My only constructive comment would be that the guides have some more knowledge about the history of the area and the culture.

Bilal was a wonderful guide! He knew all the best spots for photos away from the crowds and was full of information about the area. It was rainy/overcast on the day we visited Mt Fuji, but Bilal was able to adjust and help us find locations we would never have seen on our own.

We had a great time with our guide going through the areas around Mt Fuji. We were in winter still so no cherry blossoms and a limited view but he ensured we had a great experience for our day trip from Tokyo!

Shan regaled us with stories about life in Japan. He accompanied us to all the tourist attractions and was a real guide versus just providing transport.
