  I signed up for a three-day, two-night tour. A friend and I signed up, but they organized a private tour so we could walk at our own pace. The trekking course is also a mixture of a vantage point course and a jungle course, and all three days I enjoyed it without getting bored.

  

  

• Terrific first trip to Nepal

  I am a well-seasoned traveler but not typically an impulsive one, at least not when it comes to completely new destinations. I found myself in Bangkok for 3 weeks and even though I love the big mango I didn’t need 3 straight weeks so I had planned on getting out of the city during at least week 2. Sunday night I found myself having dinner with friends and thinking that some fresh mountain air would be really great. I booked a flight Sunday night and flew out Tuesday morning. I searched for 3 and 5 day treks and came across the Alpine Club of Himalaya. I read all the feedback and reviews and sent them some messages on wechat. Sujan responded quickly and sent me details on some options and we settled on a 5 day plan for trekking in the Annapurna to Poon Hill and a helicopter tour up to Everest. Sujan was a pleasure to work with and my time in Nepal was terrific. He was at the airport with the driver when I arrived to pick me up and take me to the hotel in Kathmandu and help me get organized. Went with me to work out a local sim and pick up a jacket since I had only packed for tropics this trip. Then after a couple hours on my own he picked me up and we went out to dinner the first night. My guide, Ngwang, for trekking was at the hotel when we arrived so I could meet him and know who I was looking for at the Pokhara airport the next day. I really cannot say enough about having Ngwang as my guide. Since I was trekking alone it was just the 2 of us for 3 days so I really got to know him and it was a wonderful experience getting to make a new friend. As a guide he was great in arranging things and looking after me and making sure I was comfortable and was having a great experience. I honestly can’t imagine trekking in Nepal without him as my guide, he was just excellent and a real asset to the Alpine Club of Himalayas. My itinerary brought me in from Bangkok and first night in Kathmandu at the Alpine Hotel which was in a great location and good spot for my first and last nights of the trip. Next morning a short flight to Pokhara and then a car ride with Ngwang to Nypol were we started our trek. The first day was an easy break in day and with only the 2 of us made good time and arrived in Tikhedhunga in a few hours and stayed at the Green View Lodge. I found all the food to be good throughout the trek as everything is made fresh. The second day was spectacular as we climbed a good amount of vertical for around 8 hours but was still comfortable. The lodge in Ghorepani, The Snow View Lodge, was great and I had a small private bathroom and hot water which was an awesome amenity. They have a fire going in the main room which was a terrific meeting area and made some new friends I played cards with that night. The lodge owner also had made a fresh apple pie which tasted amazing after a long day. Day 3 was an early morning start to hike up Poon Hill for sunrise over the Annapurna. Sure it was cold, but it was worth every shiver for that view. Rest of the day was a return to Pokhara and then I took my guide out to a nice dinner. The following day did some touring around Pokhara and Kathmandu followed by some shopping in Tamal before my early pickup for Everest the next day. The bakeries around Tamal sell everything half off after 8pm so I picked up a few nice baked goods for the next day. Pickup was at 5 and since we couldn’t be sure on return I had to have everything ready for my flight back to Bangkok at 3. Some delay at the airport as they worked out helo loads and eventually myself and a british couple were loaded and headed to Lukla for the first leg. The view over the hills is terrific and a helicopter’s speed lets you enjoy it more than in a plane. We ended up with about an hours delay in Lukla but really was fine as it gave us extra time to enjoy the mountains and watch air operations at Lukla which are fascinating. We picked up a 4th passenger in Lukla and a more powerful helo and headed to Everest. The view and experience were amazing. I only wish there was more time up on the mountain but it's very brief due to altitude. After Everest we stopped for a nice leisurely breakfast at Hotel Everest View and had plenty of time for photos. Everything on the trip went smooth and made for a great introduction to Nepal. Sujan also checked in with me throughout the trip to make sure everything was going smooth and I was enjoying myself. This type of attention to detail and care really makes the difference in a quality operation. When I return to Nepal I will certainly use them again.
