• Foraging in a Slovenian forest!

  We couldn't have asked for a better time with Katarina and Nicolay, both experienced and knowledgeable. We spent the morning in a serene forest in Pokljuka learning about the sylvan ecosystem and the mushrooms that live there. We found many species and learned some ways to help identify them including how or whether they fluoresce when exposed to a black light, whether they are attached to a single needle or whether they smell like rotten cabbage. Some that we found - king boletes - we saved to be eaten later. This wasn't a hard hike; more like slow stepping through the forest noticing something new always within a few feet. We circled back to the start and ate lunch together talking about Slovenian food and the role that wild foods play in the preparation. This was a special experience for learning and also for gaining reverence for the wooded places in Slovenia.

  What a lovely city and brilliant guide. The itinerary was carefully planned and included incredible activities. Forests and fields of fungi! Thankyou to the Goddess of Mars for delicious mushroom soup with bread, amazing butter cookies and Cockta, of course. Thankyou to the woman climbing the spiral staircase to find the perfect map that was lost and then found again. Thankyou to the wee tortoise who helped me embrace the beauty of Slovenia and thankyou to the black cat that didn’t cross our path. Mostly, eternal gratitude to Lado for acting as conduit. Hvala

  This tour allowed me to experience the tradition of foraging in Slovenia. We got an early start to meditate in the ancient trunk of a linden tree before watching the sunrise from a hilltop overlooking cloud-covered Ljubljana. Be prepared with hiking shoes for your trek through the forest. This was the season for mushroom hunting. Our guide, Lado, identified each mushroom we discovered, explaining which ones were harmful and which were healthy. He led the tour with just the right blend of information and humor. When our baskets were full, we all pitched in to slice the mushrooms and cook up a feast. Highly recommend this mindful excursion to a secret spot in a beautiful Slovenian forest. • A fungus affair (aka: an incredible day with Lado!)

  The short of it- BEFORE I met Lado: That plate is mine- no mushrooms! YOU eat the mushrooms yourself! AFTER I met Lado: Oh… can I try that one too?! (Picture a look of curiosity, surprise and bliss) The slightly longer of it- Rather than talking you through the experience step by step (especially since these adventures are uniquely planned depending on the season, weather, group members’ needs etc.) I’ll hash out some thoughts pertaining to the entire day: 1. Lado is incredibly warm and inviting. He is creative and organized- and he loves playful surprises (there was a local secret he shared with us just before sunrise on this particular trip. I shan't disclose it here, but you’ll be able to see it in the mini documentary once it comes out). 2. Lado is amazingly in tune with nature and with people. He has a joy and a sense of humor that are contagious. Throughout the day I felt so taken care of- and I know my fellow mushroom hunters felt the same. 3. One of the best parts- mushroom hunting is only ONE of the things you can do with Lado through Lifetime Experience! 4. Mushroom foraging (on one’s own) isn’t something one picks up in a day. Having Lado’s expertise and hands-on instruction was invaluable. Lado provided a lot of helpful guidance, but I would not dream of going without an expert like him! I felt safe and empowered at the same time. 5. I loved the stories and explanations Lado shared, bringing history and science alive. This was a holistic and invigorating experience that touched all senses and spoke to mind, body, and soul. Thank you, Lado!

  My friend and I had a wonderful visit with Sarah and her dog Liza. She was a charismatic guide with a great sense of humor. The meal was delicious and the demonstration was authentic and educational. We loved supporting these local epicureans.

  My husband and I had truly lifetime experiences with Lado, both in group and private tours. The truffle hunting tour is an all day delight. It includes a truffle hunt with a personable and informative truffle hunter and her gentle truffle hunting dog, a tasting tour of a local winery and their vineyards, lunch at the winery with the friendly owners, with delicious Slovenian smoked ham, sausages, and cheese starter plates, refreshing elderberry flower juice and the exquisite wines of the site, followed by group preparation of an out- of -this -world delicious pasta dish, with an astonishing quantity of truffles. All located on a verdant hillside, with a panorama view of the valley below and the opportunity to meet other friendly folks from all over the world (South Africa and Germany on our tour). What a perfect day! We also did forest tours with Lado, which were the highlight of our trip, as forest lovers. We hiked the pristine pine forest of Pokjluka, in the foothills of the Julian Alps, a cathedral of tall pines, aplendor in moss, mushrooms, small blueberry bushes, alpine flowers and tiny frogs. After our hike we enjoyed a sumptuous feast at a nearby restaurant that serves Slovenian food and wild game. We also hiked with Lado in the rolling meadow trails and awesomely healthy mixed pine and deciduous forests near Katarina and St Jacob, with a view of Ljubljana in the valley below, as well as the riverside forest of Iska Vas, near Ljubljana. Lado's knowledge of and delight in the flowering herbs, trees, and mushrooms will become your delight , as you experience the majesty and magic of vibrantly healthy forest ecosystems with him. If you go in late summer or early fall, you may be lucky enough to pick and savor the most delicious chanterelles and porcini mushrooms of Europe. Whatever tour you choose with SLOVEenia Eat and Lado you can be sure of a truly memorable adventure in nature, fascinating conversation , and a delicious ending at the best restaurant in the area. We so are looking forward to future tours with him, including a day as a beekeeper!
