We will swim, hike and cross thru the forest and river several times to get to our destination. We will also cross 2 cave’s underground tunnels and swim out to the other side. Cuevas Arenales isn’t a typical “cave” hollowed out with a big ceiling. It’s more like a gorge / canyon carved by the river over millions of years: a rock channel with very high walls, often forming overhangs, rock shelters and “cave-like” passages. The same river that feeds Charco Azul flows through these rock formations — so you don’t just walk through dry rock: you swim and wade through water.
