The guided tour begins at sunset next to the reception center in the historic village of Castelo Melhor.

Marco welcomes you and gives you recommendations for this trip through Time!

The descent to the Côa Valley (6 km) is in a 4x4 vehicle between ancient stone walls, olive groves and traditional almond groves. Along the descent we have a remarkable panoramic view of Quinta de Erva Moira, one of the most beautiful Quintas in the Douro.

We begin to travel through time guided by the guide's skill, imagining mountain goats, herds of primitive bulls, horses and deer grazing along the banks of the river and a group of hunter-gatherers who attentively follow the herds preparing for the hunt!

We parked next to the Côa River and when we got out of the car, the sounds, smells and sky enveloped us! We awaken the senses in harmony with the natural environment.

A short walk (300 m) takes us to the 1st of 5 rocks.

By turning on the beaming light, we open the window of time and reveal the art of our ancestors in all its splendor!

Parque Arqueologico do Vale do Coa

After meeting at the meeting point, we will descend on a 6km ride in a 4WD vehicle to the Côa Valley Archaeological Park. Breathtaking landscapes between ancient stone walls, olive groves, almond groves and vineyards. The guided interpretive tour allows you to discover the landscape at the same time as we travel back in time to the Upper Paleolithic where we can see, in the place where they were recorded, rock art with approximately 30 thousand years of history!!! The natural riverside environment, the sounds and smells are the perfect setting for this journey through time!

Castelo Melhor

Meeting point is in the historic village of Castelo Melhor. The Castelo Melhor castle is one of the best examples of a secondary medieval fortress, built in one of the most peripheral areas of the peninsular kingdoms. The original work is Leonese and dates back to the beginning of the 13th century, when there was an intense fortification of the Riba-Côa line, an area constantly disputed by the Portuguese and Castilian monarchs. It was in this context that Afonso VII, in 1209 or 1210, ordered the construction of the fortress, simultaneously giving it a charter, in an attempt to consolidate population and military, which proved to be of relative importance in the following two centuries. Less than a century later, with the Treaty of Alcanices (1297), Castelo Melhor passed to the Portuguese crown

It begins with a ride in the off-road vehicle into the sunset. The 30,000-year-old engravings can be seen particularly well in the dark with artificial lighting. The Fuhrer explains everything in detail. An unforgettable experience!

We went back to this fantastic venue again after first going there last week. Great food and service again. We will return during our next holiday in Merimbula. Highly recommend this place to dine at.

A true wonder of experience with the Marco at the leme. A knowledge in detail, both from the archaeological point of view as well as from the artistic and tribal point of view of our ancestral peoples. All this along with a night of vibrant starry sky and memorable views, could not recommend this experience with Marco anymore. Repeat!

Amazing visit with the Marco: strict, friendly, authentic, relaxed and very helpful. I highly recommend this visit, for the incalculable value that the engravings and the landscape represent) and I was very curious about the other experiences in Nature that the Marco provides.

So the visit ended up being at night due to the weather (heat wave). Fortunately, this made for quite a unique experience. The ride to the rock site was through the last few vineyards of the High Douro valley wine region, which allowed us to see the Douro valley landscape with its vineyards while we moved to the river banks and to the paleolithic art site. At the site, the banks of the Coa River were beaming with life. When we arrived at the site... oh boy! It's hard to put into words a moment of immense beauty. We spent time watching and listening to Marco's every word, with his wealth of knowledge and patience. I highly recommend this tour

Marco was very sympathetic from the beginning and open to all questions during the tour. You couldn't have made the leadership better and more interesting. Also for our teen children it was a very nice and interesting experience. Marco gives a lot of high-quality information for everyone very understandable. His English is very good and we understood him very well. The rock art was really very impressive and it is a mystical place Marco took us to. I don’t usually write reviews, but for Marco and his enthusiasm for the references, which comes across at any time, I am very happy to make an exception. Wow - a really great experience, especially in the dark.
