  Nuuk is the biggest city in Greenland and the smallest capital in the world with a population of around 20,000 people, more than third of the country. It can be trace back to 2200 BCE where relics of habitation by Inuit peoples have been found. The Danish name for Nuuk was Godthåb. In 1728 Danish-Norwegian missionary Hans Egede landed and preached Christianity here; the stone he used to stand on to preach is supposed to be preserved near the cultural centre, where a viewing platform has been erected to avoid visitors approaching the enclosed stone. Nuuk is located on the south-west coast, has the largest fjord systems in the world and is accessible directly by air. The centre of Nuuk is quite compact and it is easy to walk to most of the attractions. At the old Colonial Harbour where the former fish market was located, a legendary statue sits in the harbour depicting Mother of the Sea, Sedna. The statue is sited so that it above the water level at low tide but submerged at high tide. There are various legends that relate to a father and his daughter where for one reason or another when they are out at sea she falls in to the sea. Her cut fingers become seals, walruses and whales, and she becomes protector of all sea animals. If marine hunters overkill marine animals then she hides them in her hair to protect the rest. It is not until a shaman dives to comb her hair that the animals are freed. As there are no road connections to other towns, people have to have a boat to travel between towns. Nuuk has the largest marina in Greenland. On the other side of the fjord where the marina is, the new airport has been built and nearby an old historic cemetery runs down to the water’s edge. In the city centre a walk about the cultural centre, university area and other cultural buildings. On the way there was a sculpture of diving playful seals. In an annual snow sculpture competition one year it won the first prize. The city decided to have a bronze sculpture copy made and erected in the cultural area of the city. As the marine animals form most of diet of the people the sculpture represents respect for the animal and its role in sustaining communities in Greenland. A visit to a local family in their home and taste their home prepared food. which consisted of boiled whale blubber, dried herring slices, homemade cumin based biscuits were served with hot herbal tea made from herbs collected from the mountain side.   Really great tour, especially when you first arrive. The guide incorporated a lot of her personal experiences with the folklore and growing up in a unique place with the history and things we saw. The food was excellent, especially since the place was in the newer part of town which I may have never see otherwise. Would recommend to anyone visiting.
