What makes Old Icelandic Books truly special is its authenticity and rarity. This is the only place in the country where you have the opportunity to handle those rare books and manuscripts.
This is not a standard museum exhibition behind glass cases. Visitors encounter genuine antiquarian Icelandic Books and manuscripts-objects that have survived centuries in a country were literature became the backbone of national identity. The experience is intimate and personal. It's guided directly by Thor, the guardian of the books that restores the books him self, offering first-hand insight into preservation, provenance and historical context.
The Collection connects directly to the literary tradition that produced works like the Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda, texts that shaped global understanding of Norse mythology and influenced writers such as J.R.R. Tolkien and composers like Richard Wagner.
The experience combines scholarship, restoration experties and cultural depth

Guests learn how these texts preserved the stories of heroes, settlers poets and lawspeakers and how they shaped global understanding of the Viking Age.
Browse through hundreds of years old, extremely rare old books and manuscripts

This was a one-of-a-kind experience! Eyðor shared precious books, maps, and manuscript pages from his collection, explaining their significance and how he restores them. We were especially interested in the sagas, and we did not leave disappointed! Being able to touch and examine these precious works was truly incredible. Thank you!!!

What a great experience! If you are interested in old books and manuscripts, and how they can be recovered and repaired this is the place for you. We got to see and to hold some amazing old texts, including a first edition of the saga of Viga Glum from 1785, Njal's saga from 1772, and many others. The owner is really knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and clearly loves sharing his experiences with others. Highly recommended.
