Princely Court
To get here we drive from Bucharest about one hour! Targoviste Fortress is one of the most important medieval monuments in Romania. With a history that goes back to the 15th century, this former princely court was used as a residence by some of the most famous princes of Southern Romania, including Constantin Brancoveanu and the legendary Vlad the Impaler who built the emblematic Chindia Tower. Targoviste was the capital of Southern Romania in the medieval centuries before Bucharest achieved this status. The princely court was mentioned starting with 1417-1418 in a document of Michael the 1st, the son of Prince Mircea the Old who built here a church in 1415. During this initial stage, the fortress was rather small, surrounded by a wooden defense wall. It’s Vlad Dracul who extended and modernized the court to the standards of a princely residence, fortified against enemy attacks
Chindiei Tower (Sunset Tower)
Start with a walk up to Chindia Tower, the symbol of the princely court of Targoviste. A view from the tower’s balcony will give you a panoramic perspective over the entire court, especially on the ruins of the two princely palaces, from the 16th century and the 17th century. From the balcony, you can also observe the contour of a church dated back to 1415. After walking around what remains of the palace, visit the two churches that still survive centuries after they were built. The small Holly Friday Church is located close to Asylum built by Lady Balasa. Not as impressive as the Great Princely Church, this is, however, the only monument built in the 15th century in Southern Romania still conserved in its original form.

5.00I had an absolutely wonderful day with Nicholas on The Real Dracula Experience. From start to finish, he made the journey fascinating and engaging — there was never a dull moment! Nicholas is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about Romania’s history, legends, and hidden treasures. He brought every stop to life with stories of the real Vlad Țepeș, the relics, and the rich layers of Romanian culture that most people would miss without a guide like him. Beyond his historical insight, Nicholas is just genuinely great company — easy to talk to, funny, and thoughtful. I thoroughly enjoyed our conversations throughout the day and left with a much deeper appreciation for the places we visited. If you’re looking for an authentic, memorable, and insightful experience in Romania, I can’t recommend Nicholas highly enough!

5.00The tour was amazing. We recovered several places in a very organized fashion. Dan, our tour guide and the driver, was absolutely perfect. He was very knowledgeable and gave us all the necessary information for us to have a more informed experience. He’s a great driver and drove very carefully. Moreover, he’s very understanding, helpful and accommodating. I highly recommend the tour and Dan, as a tour guide or driver.

5.00We had an absolutely amazing experience with Nicolas as our guide!!!! He picked us up at the hotel, was personable, friendly, and flexible. An extremely knowledgable guide, Nicolas was open to any question and shared an abundance of information about Romania. Seeing Targivoste, climbing the Sunset Tower, visiting the monasteries, and checking out the dam was amazing. Nicolas knows the land, the sites, and the people. Highly recommend traveling with him! We will definitely book with Nicolas when we return to Bucharest!

4.00Our theme for our vacation as walking in the footsteps of Vlad the Impaler and you can’t have this theme and not make Targoviste princely court your first stop! Our guide/driver for the day was Nicu. Nicu was punctual, professional, well informed and a very safe driver. Through discussions with Nicolas at the office, we were aware that Poenari was not open for tourism. This wasn’t posted on their site, but I advise that you check before you go because there are really only two well known structure created by Vlad the Impaler, Chindiei Tower and Poenari Fortress. Through these discussions we were able to modify the tour to include the National Military Museum instead of the long drive to Poenari for a peek from a distance. Nicu walked us around and provided good intel about the church, ruins and the tower. Once completed (and some ice cream consumed outside the gate {it was hot} we headed back to Bucharest to the Military Museum. I have to say, I have traveled around seeing many military museums, but this one was probably in the top five. Highly organized, lots of actual mementos on display and Nicu brought good insight throughout all periods of the museum. Only bummer was the tanks that are kept at the site were down for repair/renovation and we were not able to view them. After the museum, Nicu took us to nice restaurant where we enjoyed the meal. Portions are crazy, so we couldn’t finish all that we were provided (except the beer of course). Next, because we modified our tour and were very efficient guests, Nicu offered to take us around Bucharest for a little site seeing tour. Great intel was shared and locations were pretty interesting ending at Palace of the Parliament. Wow, can you say excessive? After the little city tour, we were delivered safe and sound back to our hotel. We recommend this tour and suggest asking for Nicu because he’s pretty good at what he does!

5.00Such an amazing tour! we visited several places, each with a meaningful historical background for the country, specially about Vlad Tepes legacy. Tour guide was very friendly and kept a nice conversation and profesionalism, even when Poenari castle was closed, he filled the time with other nice places around and the oportunity to try traditional food, I learnt a lot thanks to his knowledge of every place we saw.
