We had the most amazing experiences on this tour/art workshop. Not only did Misato tell us about cultural and historical information related to Otsu town, she was very flexible in tailoring the tour to our interests. When we expressed interest in a shop along the tour route that was shaving the bonito to make katsuobushi flakes, she stopped in with us to talk with the store owner who showed us the shaving machine and gave us information on how to shave the bonito ourselves. It was a lot of fun. We were also able to visit a store that makes funazushi, a rice fermented fish, that is a specialty of the Lake Biwa area. We bought a packet and were able to try some at Misato’s workshop at the end of the tour. It was delicious and if you like fermented foods or that really strong blue cheese-like flavor, I highly recommend that you try it. We stopped at many other interesting spots, including a sweets shop and pickled goods store. All the food was tasty and at the end of the walking tour we painted some bells in the style of the Otsu-e folk art. Misato told us about the history and development of the Otsu-e style as we painted. After the workshop was over, Misato gave us some suggestions of places to visit and eat lunch at. Overall, we were very excited and pleased by all the things we were able to experience and Misato made our trip much more interesting!

Thoroughly enjoyed Otsu-e workshop by Misato . I enjoyed and appreciate the the cultural origins and stories of the folk art she shares , authentically keeping her family and cultural heritage going. I enjoyed creating my own bell. She also brought us to the Miho Museum and nearby pottery venues around Shiga. Superb experience and highly recommend!

We had an unforgettable time with Misato: learning about Otsu-e , the origins and how it has evolved and we painted our individual oni-bells with her. She took us through the process like the wonderful teacher she is and was a great chat over tea and snacks. Thanks again Misato! We strongly recommend this experience to anyone enjoys culture and art, it’s very refreshing after an otherwise touristy itinerary as well.

At the end of March, my family and I had the pleasure of experiencing a wonderful and heartily planned tour in Otsu with Mrs. Misato. It brought us closer to the fascinating history of Otsu-e art as well as that of the two temples Enman-in and Miidera. We could discover and experience true “hidden gems”, including a small tea ceremony, the royal game Tosenkyo and many local specialties. Mrs Misato was always friendly, attentive and very educated. Thanks to their excellent guidance, we fell in love with the city of Otsu and would highly recommend any Japanese traveler to visit this beautiful place. The tour with Mrs. Misato was definitely the highlight of our trip to Japan! So we would like to thank her from the bottom of our hearts!

I was also able to hear about Otsu-e, and I thought it had satirical content. I immersed myself in Otsu-e painting. It was a bit difficult to balance, but I was able to create something that had my own taste.

As someone interested in unique travel experiences and learning about traditional culture, my friend and I decided to go for this Otsu-e workshop and it did not disappoint. In fact we got more than we had expected as aside from the art experience, our lovely guide, Misato-san took us for an stroll from Otsu station to her family's studio and told us about the history of the town and several traditional businesses along the way. We were able to try some traditional snacks and tea. At the workshop, she also gave a short presentation of Otsu-e through history. I highly recommend this experience if you like Japanese culture even if you can't draw well like me!

It was my first visit to Ohtsu city, the capital of Shiga prefecture and the main port of Lake Biwa the largest freshwater lake in Japan. The city was also the last post town on the Tokaido trail connecting Tokyo and Kyoto in Edo period. I learned a lot more about the facts and history of the city from the owner of Ichiewado Seminar House and a good friend of mine. After a nice catch up, I painted my own bell at her workshop. The design is a guardian demon from Ohtsu-e, a local folk painting from Edo period. I chose my colors and started painting. Not quite confident at first, but as I went on painting I was immersed in it having lots of fun. Painting my own Ohtsu-e with a long history made me imagine the time when travelers walked the trail and got rest and food and souvenirs on their way. Now my little guardian demon bell is on duty at the entrance of our house protecting it from any evil spirits that try to come in!

Takahashi-san is such a caring person. She was making sure that I arrived safely due to the typhoon. I could tell she was very nice person from her emails but once I got to know her, she was easy to talk to and gave me lots of compliments about my painting. It was a fun and educational experience even for a native Japanese. I didn’t know some historical background though I quite enjoyed learning it. Painting on the Oni bell made me calm and relaxed.
