Our Paella and Burnt Basque cheesecake class isn’t a demo, it’s a true hands-on experience. Every participant cooks every dish: the starters, the different types of paella, and even the iconic Burnt Basque Cheesecake from scratch. No spectators, no shortcuts.
We keep our groups small (maximum 12 people) so your host can guide you properly, answer questions, and make sure you actually learn the techniques, not just watch them.
The class takes place in our professional cooking school in downtown Bilbao, just across the river from the Guggenheim — an unbeatable location that’s easy to reach from any hotel.
And of course, the experience ends the best way possible: sitting down together in a private dining room to enjoy everything you’ve cooked, paired with 3 glasses of local wine or non-alcoholic options.

In this hands-on cooking class you’ll prepare a couple of Spanish starters, two types of paella and you’ll also make your own traditional Burnt Basque Cheesecake from scratch. It’s a full menu, so you won’t need lunch afterwards. Drinks are included: you’ll enjoy 3 glasses of local wine or non-alcoholic options during the meal. Everything is fully hands-on and limited to a maximum of 12 people, keeping the experience personal, relaxed and fun. All ingredients, materials, apron and e-recipes are provided. After cooking, you’ll sit down in one of our private dining rooms to enjoy everything you’ve prepared.

Mikel helpfully guided our group through making not one but two delicious paellas, chorizo, peppers, sangria, and a dessert. We ate great, had local wines, and heard lots of stories about the basque region and his experiences as a chef. The class was around 4 hours, so plan accordingly. The venue was clean, nice, and a cute shop with wines, small gifts, and pinxtos. We would repeat any time! I just

In 10 days of travel in Spain, this was far and away the best activity we chose. Chef Mikel is passionate about his work and conveys his love of regional foods to his students, and really knows his stuff! The kitchen is clean and beautiful, and everything is well organized. We came away well-fed, with knowledge (and recipes!) of local foods, wines, and customs, and now possess skills and memories that will last a lifetime. We highly recommend this class and Chef Mikel in particular.

This was an absolutely awesome cooking experience! Mikel, the head chef, was very friendly and fun! We made chorizo, green peppers, 2 different types of paella and a delicious dessert. We experience cider and made the BEST sangria that I have ever had. I would definitely recommend this cooking class to English speaking people who are visiting huge Basque Country and looking to get a taste of the local culture.

It was entertaining, educational and delicious!! Mikel was a great teacher and Gastonomia Bilbao is a beautiful space with a shop, wine tasting room and bright clean kitchen.. The two kinds of paella and few apps we made, dessert and wine were excellent. Definitely recommend!
