A tour that combines Stanley with wildlife stops like Kelp Point and Gypsy Cove is special because it blends cultural history and local highlights in the world’s most southerly capital with close-up encounters with iconic sub-Antarctic wildlife. In Stanley you’ll see charming British-style architecture, the Christ Church Cathedral, the Whalebone Arch, historic monuments, shipwrecks and hear local stories that bring the Falklands’ heritage to life. From there you head out in a 4×4 across rugged landscapes to Kelp Point, where you can watch massive Southern Elephant Seals lazing on the shore alongside playful gentoo penguins in their natural habitat — often with penguins coming close if you stay still. Then at Gypsy Cove near Stanley, you’ll enjoy a scenic bay and Magellanic penguins nesting among the tussac grass and often a variety of other birds, all against a dramatic white-sand beach backdrop.

Kelp Point
Kelp Point, also known as Whale Point, is a remote coastal headland on the eastern side of East Falkland in the Falkland Islands, known for its rugged coastline, beaches, and offshore kelp forests. It is especially notable for its abundant wildlife, including Southern Elephant Seals, penguins, and large numbers of birds, with seabirds and coastal species frequently seen along the shore and cliffs. Largely undeveloped and typically reached by guided 4×4 trips from Stanley, Kelp Point is valued for its wild, unspoiled nature and excellent wildlife viewing rather than visitor facilities.
Stanley
The Whale Bone Arch is one of the most iconic landmarks in Stanley and a powerful symbol of the Falkland Islands’ maritime heritage. Erected in 1933, the arch is made from the jaws of two blue whales and was built to commemorate the centenary of British administration of the Falkland Islands. It stands directly in front of Christ Church Cathedral, creating one of the most photographed scenes in the islands. The arch reflects the Falklands’ deep historical connection to the whaling industry, which played a major role in the South Atlantic economy during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. At the time, blue whales were the largest animals ever hunted, and the sheer scale of the bones makes the arch especially striking. Today, the Whale Bone Arch serves as a reminder of the islands’ seafaring past and evolving attitudes toward marine conservation, making it a meaningful landmark whether viewed up close or as part of a city drive-through tour.

We did not know how large our group was going to be, but it turned out that it was just the two of us and the very knowledgable guide/driver. It suited us, perfectly.

The driver, Jamie, was great. Saw elephant seals and penguins. This involves about 3 hours on not just unpaved roads but basically trails! Probably worth it.

Dress in layers. Be prepared for a bumpy ride! Worth it though! This experience was once in a lifetime for us. Our guide, Simon, was terrific. Very knowledgeable.

It was a pleasure to do that tour with Marcelo, it was very interesting to learn from him, the history of the island, its nature and the type of life in that British area. It was also an experience traveling in an English-style vehicle, it remains in our hearts, it will be unforgettable for us, thank you for everything!

Had a great day visiting penguins and elephant seals. We were a small group so we were able to get to our sites well ahead of larger tour bus groups - and benefitted with quality (almost solo) time with the wildlife. The only negative was the very high price for this tour.

Great close up time with Elephant Seals and Gentoo Penguins. Our guide Marcelo was very informative and helpful and really made the experience a memorable day out. Expensive but then all the trips available direct from the Cruise Ship were similarly priced….

Enjoyed our tour very much, we were mad at the dock, and introduced to our guide, and went off on a wonderful tour of Stanley, and out to see the many penguins.
