Travel the back roads through the heart of Madison County under the wing of one of our guide experts, who are all residents of Madison County. Madison County's world-famous covered bridges were the inspiration behind, and the setting of the novel by Robert James Waller and the 1995 film "The Bridges of Madison County", starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep.
Six of the original nineteen covered bridges remain, making Madison County the Covered Bridge Capital of Iowa. Five of the bridges are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Each two-hour personal guided tour includes information about the construction and history of the bridges, the movie production, and a variety of other local historical information. You will visit three of the county's most popular covered bridges and have a chance to walk through them and take plenty of photographs.

Meet your tour guide at the Welcome Center, located on Winterset's courthouse square. Your guide will tell you briefly about the history of Winterset and Madison County, and the 1876 limestone courthouse at the town's center.
Roseman Bridge
Explore the Roseman Covered Bridge, one of two bridges featured in the movie "The Bridges of Madison County", starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep. Built in 1883, the Roseman spans Middle River and is thought by some to be haunted. The Roseman is a perfect example of the flat-roofed covered bridges that are unique to Madison County.

5.00I did not book that trip, just took uber and came with my wife to the Welcome center. Ladies there were unbelievable nice, they tried to find a guid for us and because nobody was available made the trip for us by themselves. My wife is a huge fun of the “The Bridges of Madison County” so the trip to Winterset and meeting such a nice people was a highest point of our perfect trip to Iowa. Advice to readers, do your homework and book the trip and advance.

5.00How awesome to walk on the same ground as Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep!! Amazing countryside, I mean "real country". There are self guided tours where you follow a map to the bridges but I HIGHLY recommend getting a tour guide. I believe our guide's name was Diane and she was a wealth of knowledge. We would have missed so much on a self guided tour. From the different construction of the bridges to her experience of watching the film being made to her insights of the entire area. The history of Winterset, Iowa is amazing and the way this small town is preserving it is commendable.

5.00What a treat it was to be on a guided tour with Phyllis. We learned so much about the bridges, community, historical figures, and trivia. We got to see things off the beaten path and learn about things normally not taught in textbooks.

5.00We loved our Bridges of Madison County tour and driving to and learning about many other places in and around beautiful Winterset! Bob, our tour guide, is very nice, good-humored and a great conversationalist. I highly recommend him for your tour of the Winterset area and the actual movie scenes from the movie The Bridges of Madison County! I’ve already recommended him to a couple of my friends who visit Iowa every year. :)

5.00After passing by a few times on our way to Kansas City, made the time to do veer off the I35 and overnight in Winterset. We are fans of local tours be they walking, or in this case, driving. Diane was wonderful - knowledgeable, engaging and proud of her community. We could have seen the same sights, but not with the same eyes of being with someone who can provide "value added" insight. Next time we decide to "veer' we may need to take in the wineries in the area. But maybe let someone else do the driving on the tour.
