Plovdiv‘s history spans 6,000 years, traces of a Neolithic settlement dating to roughly 4000 BC, ranking it among the world’s oldest cities. Plovdiv was known in the West for most of its recorded history by the Greek name Philippoupolis , which was introduced in 340 BC.
Koprivshtitsa is one of the most characteristic Bulgarian towns, still preserving the atmosphere of the Bulgarian National Revival period of the 19th century. The town is huddled in the mountain-folds, 111 km east of Sofia. The town boasts a large number of architectural monuments from the period, 383 in all, most of which have been restored to their original appearance.

I booked this day trip with Smart Trans Bulgaria through Viator, and could not see details on Viator of the meeting point (maybe I missed it) so I contacted the tour company, twice, through the Viator contact the tour company page. When there was no response I phoned the company and they said there would be an additional charge for collection from my hotel. We had been on another day trip with another company (V Travel Ltd) two days previously, and they had collected us at no extra charge. So we made our own way to the meeting point, and enjoyed the day's tour. Plovdiv is a fascinating city, and Koprivshtitsa is different from what we'd seen before. Our driver/guide had not been to Koprivshtitsa for ten years. One of the scheduled museum houses was closed.
