This experience combines the two archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum, famous for the eruption of Mount Vesuvius happened in 79 AD.
Join the guide at the entrance of Pompeii ruins called Porta Marina Inferiore, where the tour starts.
Discover the site and its best highlights with the assistance of an expert Archaeologist.
You will see the Forum – the main square – the most important houses and buildings and the famous plaster casts.
After the tour take a quick break, then reach the site of Herculaneum by the local metro line called Circumvesuviana at a few steps from Pompeii entrance.
End your tour with the site of Herculaneum, smaller than Pompeii but better preserved: visit the beach where more than 300 skeletons were found.

4.00Overall, we enjoyed the tours. The information from the guide was solid and we saw the main highlights I’d hoped to see. However- we did not know ahead of time how rigorous the hiking would be. We are fairly fit, but this tour is not for anyone with any challenges with knees, back, balance, or core stability. My phone said I walked 7 miles, much of including hopping 2-3’ from stone paving to curbs. We came down from Rome on the regional train, which was simple to arrange. However, using the local trains to and from Herculaneum was not simple and added about two miles of walking. You can avoid that by booking a private car from the Napoli train station to Pompeii and then from Herculaneum back to the Napoli train. There are no taxis in Herculaneum so you must arrange in advance. You could also pay for the package with transport to and from Rome, which is probably the smart thing to do. My one complaint about the tour itself is that we only had 20 minutes for lunch. There were only two gas station type vendors open, and as a vegetarian, there was zero I could eat. Pack a lunch. I was saved by a random protein bar in the bottom of my bag.

5.00There is no guide for your return to Pompeii from Herculaneum. The return is not part of the tour. If you park at Pompeii you’ll need to figure out how to get back on your own. Paolo did an amazing job as tour guide. He encouraged questions as he gave very insightful dialogue about the architecture and history of both places.

5.00Highly recommend. This tour is great if you’re interested in the archeology / history of these locations (it is quite pricey if you’re not). Our archeologist-led tour (our guide was Alfredo) was exceptional for this history buff (whose first career goal was to be an archeologist). It is a six hour day, which includes a 50 minute stop at a mall for lunch between sites. Can you properly see Pompeii and Herculaneum in six hours? No, you cannot. Can you learn a TON and see the highlights? Yep, absolutely. We also got to skip the ticket line and were driven to Herculaneum. All in all, well worth the cost. Alfredo was knowledgeable, efficient, polite, patient, and interesting. The tour was very well run, with an organized and professional staff supporting our guide. Great job overall.
