We arrived and were a few minutes late due to our taxi. Bernard immediately put us at ease and started to give a brief history of the colonialisation of Mauritus. The street art and architecture was striking and linked to the various eras in history and cultural significance. We made our way to the Immigration museum, square and steps. The 'Great experiment' of the 1800s and the history of migration was interesting yet harrowing, showing the miniscule difference between indentured Labour and slavery. Next we popped over to the main market in Port Louis. My husband was keen to see the meat and fish counters (I less so). If you are squeamish or do not like strong smells I suggest to wait outside. The views and smells of the fruit and vegetables market was lovely as was the jewellery like colours if the produce. Coming from Britain the smell of a market is very different. The spices and the freshness of the food was gorgeous. We went to get some agaloo chat in a wrap and also the national milky drink adooja. (The drink is very sweet). We walked through the streets and noted that many buildings had lava rock foundations. We had some delicious lemon water, fish samosas and also freshly made beef samosas just outside the temple. We popped into the temple which was beautiful and serene. The central fountain had large fish swimming in it! The 2 sacred mango trees beautifully framed the west entrance. We then made our way to a fabulous Chinese cafe and had some prawn and chicken dumplings in a broth. Afterwards we were shown the Central Governors offices and the heart of the city which was a mixture of new and older architecture. We popped along to a beautiful park lined with Banyan trees which had birds galore and fruit bats hanging from the uppermost branches. Various statues and monuments adorned the garden including a Chinese looking totem. We then walked down the Duke of Edinburgh avenue to arrive at a wonderful spice shop. We tried the Maurituan vanilla and various dried fruit and spices. We bought some vanilla and sugared ginger. Just as we were about to head back to our taxi we had some milk sweets and sweet pasties. Bernard was a thoughtful and considerate guide waiting for us to take photos and ask many questions. He was kind and took photos of us and told us at bit about his life and general culture in Mauritius. He was so kind and gave us a beautiful postcard and curry leaf branch as a gift of thanks. If you enjoy food, culture and architecture this is the trip for you. I would do it again. Thank you for an authentic and well thought out guide around Port Louis.

After a long, moderately stressful drive from Grand Baie and a little difficulty finding parking, we arrived at the meeting spot about 10 minutes early only to find out our tour guide (Bernard) was running very late (more than 30 minutes). Once he arrived, although we appreciated him speaking English, it was a little challenging to understand him. Also, he spoke very softly, so along with all the noise from traffic and people, we had to try very hard to hear him. We tried to lean in to hear and understand, but it was still difficult. What we could hear was very interesting, especially about the history. As for the food, it was very good, but more than we thought it would be. By the end, we were a little annoyed, tired, full from eating, and consequently ready to go back to our hotel. The tour said it was about 3-1/2 hrs, but it was longer than that (about 4-1/2 hrs). We did come away from the tour knowing a little more about Mauritian history, but would’ve found the tour more enjoyable if we could hear and understand his English better and if it had started on a better note.

Anne-Lisa went above and beyond to assist us with a request to change our tour date. The two American gentlemen we met on the tour were wonderful company, and our tour guide Bernard was so knowledgeable and genuinely loved sharing Mauritian history and street culture with us. A wonderful experience and highly recommended.

This lovel experience gifts to you the discovery of the truly exotic and eclectic nature of Port Louis’ population and food. A fascinating melting pot of peoples, cultures and cuisines, Mauritius and its capital offer delights and temptations that all boundaries. We had halal savory treats from a mosque, delicious soup at a Chinese shop, a Hindy vegetarian ball, delicious dessert of coconut and taro. We roamed the spice market and ended at an upscale cafe in the chic waterfront area. The gentle assault on the senses drew everyone out of their comfort zone of suburban US and Australia. Our guide Bernard ensured we gained an understanding of both the nation’s complex history as a key contributing part of the of the food experience.

We did the tour with our little family and each of us thoroughly enjoyed it! Our toddler still speaks about the roti he tasted. Bernard was super accommodating and paciente with us which we really appreciate. Anna Lose was easy to communicate. Super recommend this activity as we would have never been able to experience Mauritanian cuisine this authentically on our own!

Having little idea of what the food in Mauritius was like, we were shown such an amazing variety of local cuisine. Everything we had on the tour was a delight, from the roti to the dumpling soup to the street snacks, we couldn't wait for the next stop. There were lots of off-the-beaten path places that we wouldn't have known without this tour. Eating through Port Louis while exploring all the sights was the best way to experience this unique and lively city!

We were taken on a fun little journey through Port Louis, skipping the touristy parts and delving straight into the little alleys and local favourites. Our guide took our dietary preferences into consideration and recommended us what to order, and it was delicious every time. It was clear that the tour was created by someone who grew up there, and who knew the soul of the city (and also knew good food). We felt very safe and taken care of from start to end. Highly recommend this tour to anyone, from couples to families, who would like to see Mauritius beyond the beautiful resort walls.
