Snagov Monastery
About 45 kilometres north of Bucharest, on an island in the middle of Snagov Lake, lays the monastery with the same name. Built around the time of Vlad the Impaler’s grandfather, Mircea the Old, the monastery has become famous as the burial place of the king of Walachia who would become the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. There are many gaps to fill when it comes to the life of Vlad the Impaler. While his life has been exploited and his heroic battles against the Turks highly praised, little is known about the last hours of his legendary life. It is believed that Vlad’s decapitated body was found in the woods around Bucharest by the monks of the Snagov monastery and brought here to be buried since both Vlad and his father had donated money to the church. But Snagov was also a place of punishment. In a small cell, Vlad the Impaler invited his victims to kneel in front of an icon of the Virgin Mary. Suddenly a trap door would open and his guest would be sent to a ditch below where stakes stood erect ready to pierce his body. Decapitated skeletons found here stand as proof of these horrific crimes. Another legend says that after the battle with the Turks in 1476, subsequent to which he died, the body of Vlad the Impaler was secretly buried in the Christian manner inside either of the churches. In one version of the story, Vlad was murdered in a nearby forest, and the monks of the monastery found the body. Perhaps the monks felt indebted to Vlad for the additions he insisted be added to their abode, most bizarrely, the prison and the torture chamber. Whatever the reasons, the monks dressed the body richly and put it to rest in front of the church altar. Peasants talk about the “hidden treasures” of the Impaler. Sensing death, Vlad had them make cast-iron barrels in which he placed silver, gold and precious jewels; he then ordered the course of a river to be diverted by a dam (perhaps the Dambovita river) after getting rid of the riches, he gave free flow to the river and all the peasants involved were IMPALED! Visitors who cross the lake by boat or over the bridge, reach the quiet, remote monastery that brings the legend alive! One can pay his respects at Dracula’s tomb, located at the altar footsteps, and admire the beautiful frescoes, some of which go as far back as the 15th century. Locals tell stories about a different church that existed here, which fell into the lake together with its steeple, during a storm. When the wind blows they say you can hear a chime rising from the bottom of the lake. Nevertheless, people are superstitious and the monastery has had its fair share of bad luck: floods, earthquakes, the burning of the bridge connecting it to the mainland during the 1821 revolution as well as being transformed into a prison in the 19th century. Although there has been a lot of debate around the real tomb of Vlad the Impaler and whether you are a Dracula fan or not, the monastery of Snagov is worth a peek! It was once an important hub of the cultural and monastic life: it hosted a printing shop as well as a mint…When coming here travellers understand why it was used as a refuge as well as a prison… As for the vampire hunters…what better place to end a trip to Romania than the legendary burial place of the count of all counts: Count Dracula?! Transfer to Bucharest City to your hotel, arriving around 4 pm.

Highly recommend this trip. Our guide Bianca is the best! We had some great luck being able to partake in a couple festivals including the Ravasitul Oilor Autumn Festival in Bran, Oktoberfest in Brasov, and even the first snow on the Transfăgărășan Rd. Our accommodations were at Casa Timar - the owners of the B&B, Lili is the sweetest! We had such a great time and even my Romanian friends said we really had the full experience!

Our guide, Bogdan, was very professional, knowledgeable and passionate about local history, geography and culture. Bogdan is also well-connected within the local community - he was able to give excellent recommendations for shops with artisan products and restaurants serving specific traditional Romanian dishes we wanted to try. Every day of our tour was action-packed and we were able to cover lots of touristic attractions (including some hidden gems such as an old watermill and a traditional weaving mill). The destinations included in the tour were varied in nature: a bear reservation, a stud farm, castles (Bran, Peles), fortresses (Rasnov, Fagararas), villeages (Viscri), monasteries (Snagov) etc. The provided accommodation was comfortable (spacious, clean and warm room) and within walking distance of the Brasov city centre. Our hosts were friendly and also very knowledgeable about local history. The breakfast options provided included vegetarian meals.

Super positive experience! I wanted to take a little holiday in the Motherland, also visiting castles and visiting characteristic Romanian areas that I had never been to. With this tour and thanks to my guide I was fully satisfied, both visually and culturally! Absolutely recommended!

The tour guide/driver, Bogdan, was enthusiastic and helpful in every possible way. He was knowledgeable and explained the historical aspects of places we were visiting sufficiently well for us to enjoy them fully. Bogdan collected us from our hotel in Bucharest every day at 9 am and returning us to our hotel at around 5 pm. The Hotel in Brasow (Jacob’s Hotel where we stayed was clean and comfortable and the breakfast and customer service was excellent. Myself and my partner spent four wonderful days seeing a variety of interesting sights and places including Peles and Bran castles, a bear sanctuary and Lippizanner horse farm, as well as the breathtaking Carpathian mountains surrounding the medieval town of Brasov in Transylvania where we were based. One of the highlights of the tour for me was the medieval town of Sighasoara where we could easily have stayed the night or several days. The only day I felt was not 100% satisfied with was the third day where we visited two traditional Romanian villages with water wheels and wool manufacturing plant and the fortified church and village which did not come up to otherwise high standard of all other places on the tour itinerary. On our way back to Bucharest we passed through the stunning area of Azuga with tooth shaped peaks towering over the small ski resort town. In summary, I would highly recommend this tour and guide to anyone wishing the see the “real” Romania as well as enjoying popular tourist sights such as Dracula’s castle and the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler.

My husband and I took a four night Transylvania tour with Adriana and could not have enjoyed it more. Our wonderful guide picked us up at Bucharest Airport and took care of every detail for our tour of the region. We visited Brasov, Viscri, Sibiu, Sigishoara, and more, plus drove the Transfargarasan Highway! We saw castles, medieval towns, farms, wildlife, and enjoyed every minute. She took care of everything, listened to what we wanted, and went above and beyond to ensure our time was well spent. We can't thank her and Bogdan enough for making our trip one to remember.

Bogdan was a great guide! We had an extraordinary visit from Transylvania. We were 4 friends visiting Romania, Bogdan transported us in his vehicle (VAN), organized our stays in Pensions and showed us all the places to know. Bogdan was always in a great mood and tried to make sure everything was all right at all times. We also discovered the warm Welcoming of Romanians and their cuisine which is very natural and delicious. So without any hesitation I recommend our guide Bogdan as well as Transylvania, which is a beautiful region to discover before it becomes fashionable! Thanks Bogdan.

Adriana and Tibi live in Brasov and met us in Bucharest for the tour. They were very entertaining with information and history of the area and flexible in the scheduling. We had to move the visit to Pele's Castle to our last day. They planned our last day to make sure we made our flight to London and then back to the USA.

I stayed for 3 nights in Romania. First night in Bucharest 2nd and 3rd nights in Brasov. Bogdan picked me up from the airport and took wonderful care of me during my time in Romania. He showed me the highlights of Bucharest on the first day and on the second day we visited Bran Castle (The Dracula associated one) and Peles Castle which was absolutely beautiful. In the evenings I had time to explore Bucharest/Brashov by myself and Bogdan gave me a recommendation of where to eat at both. I am sure if I had asked for others he would have gladly helped me out as he was generally a really helpful person who knew what I needed to know. I would also add that he is honest, which I really appreciated. We also visited a really interesting fortified church in a very pretty ancient (UNESCO) village and a large fortress/fortified town full of fascinating history and with the most beautiful views (to be honest, we did so much in the time I was there I hope I am recalling it all in the correct date order! and am managing to remember it all without getting out my photos!). The last day we went to the Bear Sanctuary, which was a personal highlight, seeing the bears (although the bear's histories are very sad), and the very old monastery where Vlad the Impaler is buried (Snagov monastery). I learnt so much about Romania and was so grateful to Bodgan for all of his help, his flexibility and for his attention in looking out for me and making sure I had what I needed. I was travelling alone in a country I had nor visited before, hence being keen to use a tour. I do not hesitate in recommending this company and genuinely hope to return to Romania with friends, so they can also experience the great things I did. I will be planning to use this company again!

Bogdan took us from Cluj to Bucharest with overnight stops in Sibiel, Sighisora and Brasov. Trip also included visits to Turda Salt Mine, Bran and Peles Castles amongst others. He is a very knowledgeable guide and seemed to be well connected with people at all the stops who seemed to go the extra mile for us because of this.

We really enjoyed our tour with Alex. He was very patient with us. He answered all our questions. He brought us to great restaurants. He is a good driver. He really made sure we were having a good time touring Transylvania. My favorite was Shigisoara!!! I wish we had a longer vacation time so we could extend our stay in the pretty places. Truly memorable ....
