Duma’s recommended option, the Northern Circuit climb circles the mountain, and is the least traveled route on Kili. You’ll start in the west, circle around to the north, and ascend via Marangu on the east. You’ll then descend via the south, so you’ll see the entire mountain during your trek. This route provides the most comprehensive views of the mountain and crosses other climb routes, including Lemosho, Rongai, Marangu, and Mweka routes. The longer 8 day climb allows for greater acclimatization and as such, high summit success rates.

Drive to Londorossi Gate where you complete registration formalities. Following registration you continue a further 12km by vehicle to the route’s start point. This final drive can take anywhere between 45 minutes and 1 hour 30, depending on road conditions. From the Lemosho starting point (2389m) to Big Tree Camp (2785m) the distance is just about 5km, and just under 400m of elevation gain. The whole of the first day’s trek is spent in some of the most pristine and beautiful to be found anywhere on the mountain. Our first day ends at Mti Mkubwa, the Big Tree Camp (2785m), where, as with every night on the trek, you will arrive to find your tent already erected and a snack awaiting. A full dinner follows before you settle down to sleep to the sounds of the forest, with monkeys calling and the noisy turaco bird in this most blissful of locations, underneath the spreading branches of a beautiful old podocarpus tree.

This second day, the most varied on the trek, starts off with a continuation of yesterday’s march through the forest. Before long, however, you leave the trees behind to enter the grasses and wild flowers of the heather and moorland zone. Still climbing, you eventually round the northern slopes of the Shira Ridge – Kili’s little known third summit – and pause to admire a glimpse of your final destination, the magnificent snow-covered Kibo summit. Descending a short distance, you arrive at your second campsite, the Shira One Campsite (3504m), on the western edge of the Shira Plateau, with views across the plateau to Kibo. It is normal to experience mild headaches on this day which should be alleviated with paracetamol. The distance to Shira 1 is 7.9km. There’s an optional afternoon acclimatisation ascent of Shira Ridge 3959m for which you get arguably the best views of Kibo. From there you descend to sleep lower at Shira One (3504m) for overnight. The excursion distance is 7.6km.

Leaving the campsite, it’s less than an hour before you meet Simba Camp and a junction with the 4WD emergency track running from Shira 2 back down the mountain. From the junction with the main trail a 135-minute path picks its way between boulders, around or over petrified lava flows, and through grassy swards. Just over an hour’s schlep afterwards the path curves in the shadow of some low cliffs past an impressive cave just before the Moir Huts (4161m). Today you’ve managed to gain 657m in total over the distance of 9.7km. You can walk more, too, before dinner, with a sunset acclimatisation climb to 4300m to the ridgeline, a total excursion distance of 1.9km and a 139m gain in height.

Peace and solitude are the main characteristics of the Northern Circuit Route. Today you reach the altitude of 4402m today before falling to the Second Pofu Camp at 4033m. It is not unusual to feel some symptoms of altitude sickness (often a headache). Try to go pole pole and to drink lots to avoid this! The walk begins with perhaps the steepest climb of the day, a relentless slog up a barren slope to exactly 4300m. Make your way around Kibo’s northern face, dropping down into several valleys before clambering back out of them. Eventually, after three hours, you’ll come to the first of the Pofu Camps – followed in short order by some boulders that you need to scramble over to Second Pofu Campsite. If the skies are clear enough you should get a full frontal view of Kibo, while Mawenzi peers coyly over your shoulder and the lights of Kenya twinkle in the far distance below. The total walking distance is 9.2km - though you’ve actually lost 122m in altitude over the course of the day.

This up and down 6.8km stage continues around the northern slopes in pretty much the same vein as the previous day. The gradients aren’t quite as dramatic on this stage and the day slightly shorter though you’ll still find yourself pretty puffed out by the time you reach Third Cave Campsite. The reason for this is clear when you look at the gradient profile and see how much ascending and descending you have to do on this stage. The views, however, provide ample compensation, with Kibo to your right and Mawenzi gradually looming larger and larger ahead of you, though you won’t see much of the glorious Saddle that separates them until the next stage. Once again, it may disappoint you to find out that you’ve once again lost altitude over the course of the day, from 4033m to 3936m - a total loss of 97m.

After gently traversing the eastern slopes of Kilimanjaro, start the trek upwards from Third Caves Campsite (3936m) to School Hut (4717m). It’s a shorter distance than yesterday, but still involves 781m of height gain. Do not underestimate today and the valuable preparation you have completed prior to arriving here. The distance is 4.9km and you should arrive early to mid-afternoon. Once at camp, aim to get to sleep as soon as possible as you will be woken at around 11pm to midnight to begin your assault. Don’t worry about waking yourself for meals – your staff will wake you for these. You probably won’t feel like eating but please try to do so as you’ll need the energy reserves. You are advised to get all your gear ready for the summit bid before you go to sleep as you may feel disoriented when awoken for the assault.

Around midnight of Day 6 you depart camp for the assault to the summit. Tonight is difficult - particularly the final 550m - and you’ll need to commit to fight for the summit. Ascend from School Hut (4717m) via Hans Meyer Cave (5259m) and Gillman’s Point (5719m), to Uhuru Peak (5895m). On the summit your guide will advise how much time you can spend there in consideration of your condition, your timings, and the weather. After a rest at the top, you continue 4.86km back down to Barafu Camp – a walk that is considerably quicker than it was on the way up! At Barafu you take breakfast and relax for an hour, before continuing your march a further 6.6km down the mountain, this time on the Mweka Trail. The walk takes you back down through the alpine desert, heath and moorland zones until you once more enter the forest zone. There, amongst the trees, you find the Mweka Huts (3106m), your final stop on the trek. You have been walking for around 16 hours, less breaks!
Reach the summit of Kilimanjaro and the roof of Africa, Uhuru Peak! The peak stands at 5,895 meters above sea level and reaching the peak marks the culmination of your efforts on the mountain!
When you reach the Crater Rim, you will arrive at Gilman's Point, one of Kilimanjaro's three summits. Standing at 5,756 meters above sea level, reaching this point means that you have reached the rim of Africa's tallest mountain. You receive a certificate for reaching this point.

After breakfast, hike from the campsite to Mweka Gate (1633m), where those who made it to the summit or Gillman's Point will collect their certificates. A car will be waiting to take you back to your hotel, and a land of warm showers and cold beers. Your trek is at an end. Back to Arusha.
Finish your trek with a descent to Mweka Gate via the Mweka Trail. Once you reach the gate, complete your climb and collect your certificates.

5.00Duma looked after every aspect of this trip. We had transfers from the airports, accomodations pre and post hike. The crew on the trip (especially Coleman and Dickson) were amazing and superhuman, knowledgeable. The porters, the cook, all of the support staff were always energetic, amazingly happy and super strong. We would plod along with our day packs while they carried heavy weight dancing through the rocks and paths. Our camp was always set up before we arrived and crew would come out a kilometer or so to meet us and carry out day packs for the last while. I felt guilty. The food was great - delicious soups, fresh vegetables and fruits, crepes, grilled sandwiches - varied menus every day. Packed lunches on trail days were equally interesting and delicious. Such a unexpected difference compared to climbing everest. Walking the trail, the conversation was interesting and we learned lots of the culture and ways of Tanzania. Guides pointed out unbelievable sights and the flora and fauna along the trail. They were always eager and enthusiastic to make your trek easier in any way. The support on summit day was also over and beyond. I don't know if I would have made it without their help and support. It is also nice to see that Duma employs females - guides and porters. For any who would prefer to deal with a women on any issue, there were many in the camp. Thank you to Duma and the whole crew!!

5.00Jeff went on this trip ....here is his review: Two friends and I did this trip up and down Kilimanjaro. We had a great time and I would be happy to recommend Duma to anyone. Stacy was very easy to deal with and responsive to a few changes to our itineraries. Once on the mountain, the Tanzanian team looked after us very well. Our guides, Coleman, Humphrey and Maryam were attentive to our every need. They made great suggestions, demonstrating their vast experience with other trekkers on the mountain. The porters, cooks etc were always cheerful and supportive. On summit night, Dickson joined us and he was super helpful too. The tents were large and good quality, the food abundant and tasty. We were re-supplied with fresh vegetables halfway through the trip! Two of our group got sick after a couple days and had to go back down. They looked after our friends very well, getting them to a comfortable place as quickly as possible. The accommodations we had before and after the mountain were exceptional! I felt the cost was very reasonable.

5.00Epic hike to the summit of Kilimanjaro. Our guides Colman, Humphrey, and Maryam were very helpful and supportive over the 8 days of our trip. Excellent support service by the cooks and porters as well. They went above and beyond to look after our group at all times. Stacy organized everything and was responsive and easy to deal with. Great value for money.
An unforgettable experience lead by a kind and incredibly talented team!

5.00Having been to many places on this beautiful continent I was very excited to fulfill a childhood dream of climbing and summiting Kilimanjaro. With the guides and the porters and one other person (a small group was much preferred so I was excited to see it wasn’t 15 people like some other groups) it was still a very challenging experience. I could not have done this without Coleman (Grand master) and his expertise on monitoring for mountain sickness (altitude sickness), Dickson who is so kind and attentive and went above and beyond always! A special shout out to having female porters on the team and Mariam’s kind caring presence and endless positivity to help us keep going! And last, but not least Ernest’s continuous steady presence that makes even the most stressed person feel calm and capable. It was an unforgettable experience that has me wondering if re-locating should be to Arusha!

5.00After finishing this hike I literally could have done it again, I loved it that much! My husband and I reached the summit last September 2023, after planning and preparing for about a year. Needless to say, everything was amazing. I would recommend Duma Explorer , so easy to communicate and work with. The guides and porters were exceptional!!! We travelled in a group, ourselves and 8 others. Our only complaint during this trip was that half the group were not prepared which at times made it difficult for the rest of us that were. Unfortunately you don’t get to choose who’s in your group. We made some wonderful connections with our guides and porters. Our guide Colman Grand, was exceptional from the time he met us at the hotel til the moment we said our goodbyes. He certainly dug in and got me to the summit! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions! We also did the four day Serengeti safari . Incredible!

5.00We went with Duma Explorer and Alika Africa for our 8 day lemosho climb and then a 7 day safari in Tanzania. We were a family of 4 and travelled with our friends who were another family of 4. We had a fantastic experience before, during and after the climb and through out the safari. Starting from booking to being picked up from the airport till drop-off back at our hotel were all phenomenal. The trip was certainly made extra special by our support crew and guides that climbed wtih us. Special mention to our very capable, kind and amazing guides Emanuel, Humphrey, Abullah and Coleman. Summit night was the hardest , but these 4 along with Dickson and Adam took care of every need of ours, they took care of all of us like babies, and worked to our abilities and definitely made the difference for us between summitting and turning back. All 8 of us summitted. The rest of crew were there every minute for us, be it carrying our stuff, or making fresh food every meal for us and adjusting those based on our asks / preferences, from sunrise to sundown starting from wake up with hot water and warm beverage to sending us off to our tents with the hot water bottles, every one of our needs were anticipated and taken care of. Dickson who was our waiter stood out for all of us as our caretaker - he not only took care of our needs without even us asking him, he went above and beyond in being our photographer, nudging us to eat when we didnt feel like, coaxing us to drink water/juice as we came back after the climb and many many more . The whole crew was very happy to working for Duma and most of them explicitly talked about how they appreciate being part of Duma climb as the company takes real good care of them. Happy crew made a happy climb for us. We will totally recommend them for any trip, be it the climb or the safari. We travelled wtih 4 kids ranging between 14 to 18 and all of them appreciated and connected with the crew and enjoyed the climb thoroughly. The safari was very organized ,every details taken care of , we just had to show up. All our hotels . tents were exactly per our asks/needs/comforts and our guides Issac and Sefuni were very knowledgeable and dedicated. Even on the last day , a few hours before our flight they wanted to take us on a game drive because we hadnt seen a cheetah in all 7 days, and they drove around for miles until we saw a Cheetah and drove us straight to the airport. They were very knowledgeable and also very aware of wildlife and not bothering them , which was very evident on how they drove around the animals specially during the migration and crossing, which isnt something I could say for some of the other drivers/guides from other companies . Overall - Highly recommend this company and the crew we went with. Thank you for a very memorable experience.

5.00My wife and I did an 8-day safari coordinated by Stacy Readal at Duma Explorers on very short notice so we could experience the great migration. She put it together in just a few weeks, and she patiently and timely responded to our numerous inquiries. She did a terrific job for us, getting us into great national parks and some very nice camps. Our guide/driver, Ebenezer, was amazing. He had a great eye for ferreting out hiding animals, handled the rough rutted roads with great skill and care and was very famiiar with a very extensive area, was extremely knowledgeable on all types of wildlife, birds and plant life, and was very engaging personally. We saw water buffalo, rhinos, lions (lots), leopards (which I hear is very rare), giraffe, cheetahs, hyenas, warthogs, large herds of migrating wildebeasts and zebras (thousands), gazelles, impalas, baboons, elephants, hippos, ostriches, and dic dics (smallest antelopes). A once in a lifetime adventure trip. Just be prepared to be in a Toyota Land Cruiser for a lot of hours each day.

5.00We had an amazing time on the 8 day Lemosho route to the top of Kilimanjaro. Duma had everything well planned and organized. Their top priority was getting us safely to the top of the mountain. Our guides (Emanuel & Imran) and staff were totally cool and fun to hike with. They took the time to point out interesting wildlife and vegetation. They met with us every evening to discuss and help us prepare for the next day's hike. I highly recommend Duma to anyone considering Kilimanjaro!

5.00We had a wonderful 8 day Northern Circuit Kilimanjaro Climb with Duma in September 2022. Everything was very well planned, both in the preparation with Stacy via email/phone, with prompt replies and detailed info, as well as during the climb with a very experienced crew that took care of all details. You could see that this is the result of many years of experience as nothing was left to chance. Emanuel and Colman, our guides, were extremely knowledgeable and made sure we were always well and safe, following our pace and supporting us in the climb. The team of porters was great too, super helpful and very welcoming. We felt comfortable at all times and never missed anything. Thanks to all the crew we made it to the top, in an unforgettable experience. Would definitely book with them again.

5.00We would like to thank Duma Explorer and its great team who travelled with us during the 8 days Lemosho route to the top of Kilimanjaro. In particular, a big thank you goes to our 2 guides (Emmanuel and Humphrey) for their amazing support all the way. They are knowledgeable, patient, and fun. They had answers to all our questions, their english was impeccable and their love for their mountain is unshakable and contagious. They had no doubt we would be able to make it to the top - and we did! The crew who joined us was phenomenal. Not only did they look after us, they anticipated our needs, and were always one step ahead of us - literally. It was eye opening how hard they worked to make us feel safe and comfortable. From the hot water for washing our hands, the morning coffee in our tent, the hot water bottle to warm our freezing limbs at night. They had every detail covered. All with a smile. They were gracious and polite even when it was freezing cold, when we had walked 10hours, when we were tired. It was evident their bond was strong, they respected each other and had fun. We chose Duma Explorer because, as part of the Kilimanjaro Porter Association, of their promise to look well after their staff, porters and guides. Providing them with an above industry pay and tips. This is crucially important. While we dont blink when we buy our overpriced mountain gear we should not forget that those who get us up (and down) the mountain safely are the people we entrust our lives to. It was a life changing, intense and spiritual experience. A dream 10 years in the making that finally came true in such an unforgettable way and we have Emanuel, Humphrey, Adamou, Wazeer, Mohamed, Rajabu, Omary, Japhari, Shabani, Winston, Samson, Idrisa, Yahaya, Seleman to thank for making our dream come true.
