Basilica of Santa Croce
The Basilica of Santa Croce is one of the largest Franciscan churches and one of the greatest Gothic achievements in Italy. Santa Croce is a prestigious symbol of Florence, the meeting place of the greatest artists, theologians, religious people, men of letters, humanists and politicians, who determined, through good times and bad, the identity of the late medieval and Renaissance city. Famous figures from the history of the Church such as Saint Bonaventure, Peter of Giovanni Olivi, Saint Anthony of Padua, Saint Bernardino of Siena, Saint Louis of Anjou also found hospitality inside. It was also a welcoming place for popes such as Sixtus IV, Eugene IV, Leone X and Clemente XIV. In the church there are the tombs of the greatest artists that Italy has given to the world.
Museo Nazionale del Bargello
Masterpieces from the Renaissance and Mannerist periods can be found in the Bargello. We will see four of Michelangelo's most significant sculptures: Tondo Pitti, a stunning example of the renowned "non finito," Bacchus, Brutus, and David-Apollo. Important parallels can also be made with other pieces in the collection, such as the bronze David sculptures by Donatello and Verrocchio.

Becky with Walkabout Tours gave us the most incredible experience of discovering Michelangelo in Florence. She cared that she shared of Michelangelo — the person and the great master — in a way that we could understand as we immersed ourselves in his life’s work and walked along the exact streets he had walked upon, starting outside his boyhood home. Her knowledge of the history of Renaissance Florence, the Medici, and the artists that influenced Michelangelo seemed infinite! We have visited Florence several times and this was the best tour, with Becky making it an unforgettable experience.

We booked this tour through the Walkabout site and all the communication was quick, efficient, and friendly. I can't say enough good things about, Becky, our guide. She is incredibly knowledgeable, especially about all things Michelangelo and Medici. She is so friendly and personable, not rushing us but, rather, allowing us to take time to admire the artwork and architecture and for us to ask questions whenever we wanted to do so. The pace of this tour is relaxed and the three and a half hours flew by as we were immersed in beautiful art and architecture. Our attention was kept by Becky's depth of knowledge of history and her charming wit. It was also interesting to see Michelangelo 's "neighborhood" and to hear Becky recount stories of this great artist's life. Do not hesitate to book this tour. It is well worth the price. You will be so very glad you did!

Our guide, Lisa, weaved the story Michelangelo, the Medici, and Florence into a seamless tale, connecting all the dots. Unless you are very knowledgeable in art history it is hard to appreciate all the artistic players of the time and how they were connected. Lisa provided insight and details that were much appreciated. One would have expected that on a chilly February day that Florence would not have been full or tourists but in most venues there are long lines and having confirmed tickets is valuable. It is most recommended to visit the important sites in Florence with a guide to assist in navigating the crowds and streets that change names every couple of blocks! Thank you Lisa.

I see my review did not go through the first time so I will try to recall some of the highlights for me. Becky gave descriptive details on Michael Angelo’s life and work and attentively answered our questions. He was one of the most influential artists of the Italian renaissance and lived and worked for the Medici family much of his early life. He also worked for various popes. He endured many hardships and had a deep for for God. He was a painter, a sculptor, an artist etc. his works the Sistine chapel, the pietà, the Madonna etc. I remember he favored sculpting. It was fascinating seeing his sculptures on display and Becky brought him to life for me

Our guide was the best. We have been traveling for 40 years and never had a guide that even came close to her level of knowledge and ability to communicate it.

Where to start. The amazing views, the historical renaissance period, Michael Angelo’s artistic perfection as a painter, architecture and architecture etc. he was an impressive hard worker and very religious which shows in his work. I loved all the stories of the historical eras throughout his life. I’m amazed by the scalp and I am implored to learn more about all his protagonists that comes to life in his work. Rebecca (Becky) did an amazing job. She is very giving making sure to answer everyone’s questions, offering follow up help directly with her and recommendations with follow literature. I have taken many tours and I have to say this one was the best…very memorable.
