Etoile Rouge
Continue exploring towards the Place de l'Étoile Rouge: a vast crossroads in the heart of the city of Cotonou. This site symbolizes the ambition of General Mathieu Kérékou, who, as a young soldier who took power in a coup, aspired to make Benin the champion of Marxism-Leninism in Africa. By erecting several monuments, including the Red Star, he left an indelible mark on this political orientation.

Very correctly executed, perfect day for a Quick Look at Cotonou and Ouidah. I do think the price is on the high end, but in a pinch, you'll get a lot of value out of this if you are more than one person. As a solo traveler, you may be better off taking Gozem or hiring a taxi for the day. I don't speak French so this was perfect for me.

The tour is fast-paced but very enjoyable and exhaustive. Kader was a thoughtful, well-informed, and communicative guide and everything went as described online. I would definitely recommend this tour to travelers passing briefly through Benin.

As it happens so often, I had the guide, Kader, all to myself. I had booked the tour with an English speaking guide as my French is sadly not (yet) good enough for this, which was a good idea as there were sooo many stories and details he explained (and patiently answered my many questions). I was picked up from my hotel, and we started with a couple of monuments, 'the wall' (you will see what I mean when in Cotonou, it's near impossible to miss) and the market in Cotonou, and then drove over to Ouidah for the temple of the python, the route des esclaves and the sacred forest. We also had a (quick) lunch stop. Afterwards we headed over to Ganvie, which for me was probably the loveliest experience - a relaxing boat ride to, and through, the village. This was my only tour (and I sincerely hope I will be back soon), and I think it's a perfect introduction to the culture and places of the South of Benin.

This day trip was average. The highlight was the village, often called the “Venice of Africa.” The other attractions were less popular with tourists, despite the country’s active promotion of tourism. The tour guide was knowledgeable and self-taught in English, but he missed two spots on the itinerary: the shopping mall and the beach. While I didn’t have to visit these places, they shouldn’t have been included if they weren’t worth a visit.
