Winter mountaineering is an exhilarating and hands-on way to experience the Cairngorm mountains. Unlike winter climbing, mountaineering is about the journey. We'll select a route that will be challenging but achievable and is big on scenery and satisfaction!
On this immersive experience you'll get to climb one or more historic mountaineering routes; in a remote corrie, along an airy ridge or up sheer cliff face!
This experience is suitable for novices, beginners and travellers looking for a special experience in the local area. No prior experience of climbing or mountaineering is necessary and you'll be kept safe and encouraged every step of the way.
Our guides hold the highest attainable qualifications in mountaineering and climbing and are passionate about giving you the best possible experience. We love guiding complete beginners as much as we love guiding experienced climbers. We enjoy working with both the young and the young at heart...
We look forward to exploring with you!

Scottish winter mountaineering draws on a broad range of skills to safely travel through stunning mountain scenery. Join us for a grand tour of the frozen cliffs of the Cairngorms and experience some classic Scottish mountaineering! Your day begins in the morning when you meet our fully qualified Winter Mountaineering Guide for a discussion about what to expect during the experience. They'll answer any questions you have and supply you with everything you'll need to stay safe. After a short drive, we continue our approach into the Cairngorms on foot. Sometimes crampons and an ice axe are required for this section, but your guide will instruct you on their safe use. Our approach walk usually takes around an hour. Look out for climbers on the frozen cliffs around you and the snow topped winter mountains stretching into the distance. When you arrive below your climb, you'll be fitted with a harness and helmet and attached to your Guide by climbing rope. With ice axes deployed and crampons attached they'll lead the route by climbing ahead and securing your rope above you. Our Guides will keep you safe, improve your technique, provide encouragement and take epic photos throughout!

Sam is the best guide I’ve ever had in my decades of winter mountaineering. He’s the safest guide I know who continuously assesses risks throughout the day. He is also a fantastic teacher — I’ve learned more from him in one day than with others in a week, from seconding to leading techniques for different situations to avalanche assessment. I’ve climbed with him in the summer and winter and he’s the first guide I would go to for any future trips.

I began communicating with Sam in January 2024 and we discussed my experience and skills. He suggested options based on our discussions and the date to climb was set for 21Mar2024. During the time leading up to the climb I asked several questions about gear, conditions, the terrain, and how to prepare. Despite our seven hour time difference he always responded promptly and answered my questions in detail. The day of our climb, the weather and conditions were not the best. It was very apparent that Sam’s passion for climbing and instructing, his understanding of the terrain and conditions, and professionalism created a safe, fun filled day to climb like I have never climbed before and learned many new skills that will be useful in the PNW. I cannot wait to go back to the Cairngorms and climb with Sam again.

Had an amazing time out climbing with Sam and learned a lot. He made sure to ask what our objectives were at the start and tailored the trip around them, highly recommended!

Had a fantastic few days with Sam in the Cairngorms learning to lead climb on mixed winter routes and ice pitches! Sam planned out some really good days taking into account my objectives, which enabled me to progress quickly and I was confidently leading pitches and building belays on our final day. Sam’s experience is immediately apparent and his calm nature and good humour makes him a great leader and good fun to climb with. He’s also a fantastically skilled climber and his passion for climbing and the mountain environment is really apparent in his guiding. Whether you’ve never yet donned a harness or right the way up to being a well experienced climber looking to advance or try new unfamiliar routes, I couldn’t recommend Everyday Climbing enough and guarantee I’ll be climbing with them again in future!

I did a day’s training with Sam, refreshing and improving my winter climbing skills. Then we did one of the classic routes on the Ben. I learned so much and was so please to complete my first multi-pitch winter climb.
