This was one of the best experiences we had while traveling in Japan! Ms. Harumi and one of her students helped our family of four get started on koto. She is a gentle and kind teacher and made us feel wonderful, even when we made mistakes. We were able to learn the basic mechanics of playing, a little music reading and played three or four songs. At the end she gave a beautiful performance for us. Visiting Kyoto was nice, but having personal interactions with a local in this way took our trip to the next level! In the process, we feel we made a musical friend across the ocean.

Without a doubt, one of the best experiences I have had in Japan. You are welcomed into the classic Japanese townhouse home like friends and are immediately taught how to play koto. What is amazing, is that after the lesson, you can actually play a famous Japanese song, ‘Sakura’ well enough to be able to record a performance with the lovely teacher, who accompanies your playing. It feels amazing to play an actual song on the koto that sounds lovely to listen to after just one lesson! This is testament to how good the teacher is, as a second generation koto teacher and performer. You are also treated to some tea and a performance by the teacher at the end for your hard work! The teacher is truly so lovely and at no point in the lesson do you feel bad for making mistakes. You feel very comfortable and she is very kind and patient. There are lots of activities you can try doing in Kyoto that relate to tradition Japanese arts, as the city of culture in Japan, but if I had to pick one of the activities in Kyoto to recommend, it would be this one!

While the shrines and temples are must-sees in any Kyoto itinerary, nothing beats a quiet time with a local and engaging in a sacred art form. Shimazaki sensei and I played through around three piece of music (sakura, and two other folk melodies). They were devastatingly beautiful, and the koto brought them to life in a way that no other instrument can. Would happily do this every time I'm in Kyoto—Shimazaki sensei does a fabulous job of not only creating stunning music, but also in maintaining a non-hierarchical learning experience. She treated me more like a peer than a student, which was so refreshing. An absolute gem of an experience—make sure you don't miss it!

We had a lesson with Soushunan and really enjoyed it, easy to access using the bus and conveniently located near the Nijo Castle. Weather you play an instrument or not, I'm sure everyone can play the songs Sousgunan teaches. She is a very accomplished musician and a great teacher. Her house is also amazing, it's like stepping back in time. Highly recommend.

My Koto lesson with Harumi-Sensei became my most precious memory from Kioto. I've been wanting to try playing Koto for a very long time and my dream finally came true!! The sound is even better in real life and I feel very lucky that I got to experience a professional performance up close. I felt like crying, it's such a beautiful instrument, I could hear and feel the passion and emotions in every movement. The lesson was very fun, I could go at my own pace without any stress. With Harumi-San's help I was able to play such a lovely song, it was very satisfying^^ And of course, the atmosphere created by the teacher was so warm, calming and welcoming. Talking made me very happy, I learned a lot of new things and even were able to practice my Japanese a bit! It's not often you can encounter such a lovely person. My heart felt so full after the lesson. It's very hard to write a review that would sum up all of my feelings. If you are in Kioto, please do yourself a favor and book a Koto lesson here. You're going to remember it for the rest of your life. Thank you so much, Harumi-sensei ❤️

I got the unique experience of learning the Koto from Harumi Shimazaki in Kyoto. I had no musical background and she made it so easy to pick up an instrument. By the end of the 2 hour session, I was able to play the Sakura song! Harumi Shimazaki was a very patient teacher who peppered the lesson with explanations of Koto's cultural significance and Kyoto culture in general. I learned so much in just a short period and I feel like I got such a unique experience. I highly recommend this class for anyone who's looking for something off the beaten path in Kyoto.

Our teacher was excellent! We learned to play 3 songs on the koto. We had a lovely time speaking with her, both in English (she speaks excellent English) and in Japanese so we could practice. After we learned and played our songs, she made us tea and played for us as well. She gave us advice on buying a koto and recommended a restaurant nearby for lunch. It was a highlight of our visit to Kyoto.

For those who would like to dive into Japanese culture, or would like to know more about Japanese culture, I would suggest to have a try at this Koto workshop, its a fun musical instrument that is not hard to learn, I had much fun playing the Koto and the host was fantastic, sadly, I was 30 mins late for my appointment as I got lost, but the host was still kind enough to extend the workshop time for me. Host was also very lively and would engage in a conversation with you. She gives out a very welcoming and friendly vibes that I absolutely love.
