As a World Heritage site, the Old City of Colonia is well known for its historical architecture, drawing thousands of tourists every year. Here, typical tours focus mainly on the rich history of the town. But, if you are a wildlife lover, this is the only tour that will show you a more natural aspect of the "Ciudad Vieja".

This activity is particularly interesting for those who are taking their first steps into the birding world. Many birds you will see are common and abundant, meaning you will have several instances of connecting with them and getting to know them well. If you have not been to South America before, almost all species and even bird families will be new to you.

Even if you are an accomplished birder, this tour can yield new sightings and ticks. Some rarities for Uruguay can be seen here: nesting Southern Martins, Patagonian migrants like White-tipped Plantcutters, Straneck's Tyrannulets, and White-banded Mockingbirds, and the elusive South American Painted-Snipe.

The old quarters of Colonia del Sacramento might seem like an odd place to go looking for birds, but you might be surprised. This walking tour is specially interesting if you don't have much time in town and you are already staying at one of the several hotels of the old city. It has a low difficulty and is suitable for all ages, although you might want to watch your step on uneven cobblestone streets. You will start off at the Yacht port, and continue bordering the coastline until the Punta de San Pedro, the Southwestern-most point in Uruguay. You will then walk along a colonial street up to the main square, and past the historical wall through the colonial gate. The tour ends at the beautiful AFE park, the old railway station, with a picnic option. The streets and gardens are home to several common city birds, and the main square is a roosting spot for several of them, while the waters around the yacht port can yield some aquatic species. The Parque Lineal AFE is a wonderful green area by the river where many passerines can be spotted among the native trees, including forest and scrubland species, as well as some rare winter migrants.

We had an absolutely fantastic half day with Rafa outside of Colonia de Sacramento! We were interested in seeing some different local birds and learning a little about the area. He is incredibly knowledgeable on all the beautiful creatures around the city. He is also very patient in tracking down birds! Our first stop was almost surreal there was so much bird activity! Each stop we made had new friends to meet. At the end of our adventure we had seen over 75 species! Rafa is a wealth of knowledge and an all around great guy! We will look into a longer experience if we are ever back this way! Thank you Rafa for a truly magical morning!!

Rafa is a wonderful informative guide. We found over 35 birds and I was able to get ~20 good different pictures. Highly recommended!!

Rafa is such a great guide and made our bird-watching experience the best, especially as we are new to this! Great communication prior. Pickup at ferry pier was seamless. He walked us around the town and we got excellent description pointing out the history, culture, and most of all - the birdlife! Spotted so many birds - 25 plus and mostly all new to us! Rafa was a wonderful host and had prepared a bountiful picnic at the conclusion. Gave us super lunch recommendations and we had a delicious lunch as a result. Highly recommend this wonderful tour!

Rafa is knowledgeable and fun to be with. Anyone interested in birds at any level will benefit from this tour. Also a good introduction to parts of the Old Town you might otherwise not visit. Great snacks at the end. Highly recommended.

We had an absolutely delightful time with Rafa walking the old city while identifying 40+ species in less than 4 hours. Rafa is incredibly knowledgeable and personable. Highly recommend this tour- only wish we had more time! Colonia is a beautiful city

Did a half day birdwatching tour with Rafa on February 2, 2023 in and around Colonia and it was fantastic! Saw over 60 species. I am a photographer first and a birder second and Rafa consistently put me in a position to get great photos. My only regret is that it wasn’t a full day tour. He is an excellent birder, knowing the bird calls and birds, and can spot them quickly. And he is a joy to be with! He is personable, patient, kind, friendly and is very knowledgeable about birds, wildlife, plants and his native country. His English is excellent. Communicating with him via email and WhatsApp was easy and he was always prompt in responding. If you love birdwatching, I highly recommend him.
