Pingvellir National Park
We’ll visit Þingvellir National Park, a truly unique location where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are slowly drifting apart. Few places in the world offer such a clear and striking view of this incredible geological activity. Within the park, you’ll also find Thingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland, home to a wide variety of fish and birdlife, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts. But Þingvellir isn’t just a natural wonder—it’s also a place of great historical significance. This is where Icelanders founded their parliament in 930 A.D., with chieftains gathering here every summer for their annual meeting. The name “Þingvellir” translates to “Parliament Plains,” a nod to its pivotal role in Icelandic national history.
Geysir
Our next stop is at the Geysir Geothermal Area, home to hundreds of vibrant hot springs and two incredible geysers. The first, Geysir, is the namesake for all geysers around the world, though it erupts infrequently these days. The real star of the show is Strokkur, which erupts every 5 minutes, sending hot water shooting up to 40 meters into the air, creating a spectacular display you won’t want to miss.
Gullfoss
Next, we're visiting Gullfoss, also known as the "Golden Falls." This majestic waterfall is fed by the melting waters of Langjökull, Iceland’s second-largest glacier, and plunges into a deep canyon, creating a truly awe-inspiring sight. On a sunny day, you can catch a glimpse of Langjökull in the distance and perhaps even see a rainbow forming in the mist of the waterfall—an Instagram-worthy moment just waiting to happen!
Bruarfoss Waterfall
We will also have a stop at the Brúarfoss Waterfall, unique for its vivid blue color, caused by the minerals in the water, and its multiple cascading streams that flow through a rugged landscape. Though a relatively off-the-beaten-path, the hike to Brúarfoss offers a peaceful escape and a chance to witness one of Iceland's most picturesque natural wonders.

Seljalandsfoss
On this day of the tour, we are heading to Seljalandsfoss, another iconic waterfall that will immediately capture your attention with its powerful presence. The experience truly begins when you hear the roar of the waterfall announcing your arrival. If you're ready for an unforgettable adventure, we’ll put on a raincoat and take a short hike behind the falls, where you’ll be surrounded by the sheer force of the water. The view from behind the waterfall, along with the trembling ground beneath your feet, will create a scene that’s guaranteed to be an Instagram favorite!
Skogafoss
Moving on to Skógafoss, one of Iceland’s most picturesque waterfalls. Tucked into a small gorge, the Skógá River tumbles down a 60-meter cliff, creating a dramatic sight as the water flows toward the Atlantic Ocean. For an extra adventure, we can climb the staircase beside the gorge, which takes you to a shelf above the waterfall, offering stunning panoramic views. See if you can count all the steps on your way up!
Reynisfjara Beach
The final stop of the day will be at Reynisfjara, the famous Black Sand Beach, where the powerful waves of the Atlantic crash against the unique basalt columns that line the cliffs above. The towering rock pillars in the water and the distant cliffs of Dýrhólaey create an awe-inspiring landscape. This area is also a paradise for bird lovers, especially in the summer months from June to August, when puffins and other unique bird species nest along the cliffs.

Glacier Lagoon
We’ll kick off the day by heading to the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, a remarkable 200-meter-deep glacial lagoon fed by Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet glacier of Europe’s largest glacier. During the summer, you’ll have the chance to book a boat ride, allowing you to glide between the icebergs and get a closer look at this ancient, glistening ice. If boating isn’t your preference, we’ll take a peaceful walk along the lagoon’s edge, soaking in the magnificent views and the serene silence of Icelandic nature.
Diamond Beach
On the other side of the road lies Diamond Beach, where the icebergs from Jökulsárlón are carried into the Atlantic Ocean by the tide and winds. Here, the icebergs are washed back onto the shore, creating a stunning sight on this black sand beach. The ice chunks, in all shapes and sizes, sparkle like diamonds in the daylight, with shades of white and blue forming striking contrasts. It’s a photographer’s paradise, and you’ll definitely want to capture this unforgettable landscape to make your Instagram pop!

Our guide Angie was knowledgeable. we toured many many locations all in a van for the 5 of us. Ours was a 6 day trip. The accommodations outside Reykjavík were pleasantly comfortable given their remoteness and the food in a couple of places quite good. The weather gods were good with some rain but none at our spots where we stopped. Lucky there! The highlights of the trip were the Ice Cave tour (about a kilometer of walking but worth every step) and the geothermal plant that supplies Reykjavik’s power. Very informative tour Mariana Travel (Elena and others) was superb to work and exceedingly accommodating.
