Knossos Archaeological Site

Knossos archaeological site represents the center of the Minoan civilization and the capital of Minoan Crete. The main site of interest is the Palace of Knossos, where you can see: -the Great Palace; it is the largest of the preserved Minoan palatial centers and contains the royal quarters, workshops, shrines, storerooms, repositories, the throne room, and banquet halls. - the Little Palace, where it was found the famous Bull's Head made of steatite. It is exhibited in the museum of Knossos. - the Royal Villa. -the House of the High Priest. -the Caravan Serai, where it was the entrance to the palace. It served as the public baths. - and the Royal Temple Tomb-Sanctuary, which it is considered to have belonged to one of the Last Minoan Kings.

Venetian Walls and Tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis

The Venetian Walls were part of the fortress of the city. The city was called Candia by the Venetians. Two of the city gates have survived among the centuries, Chania and Kainouria. Take time to walk outside and around the walls. At the southwestern corner of the City Walls, you will find the Tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis (1883-1947), the local author of "Zorba the Greek" and "The Last Temptation of Christ". One of the most important Greek authors through time. Take your time and enjoy the panoramic view of the city center and the beautiful sea.

What an amazing day. Giorgos was a fabulous tour guide/driver and not only took us to the designated sights but shared much of the culture and life in Crete. Tailored day to our interests. Highly recommend him to any tour group.

The tour was smooth, professional, and overall a great experience. However, we were expecting our guide to accompany us inside the Knossos Archaeological Site, but instead, we had to hire a separate guide at the entrance. This was a bit disappointing given how historically rich and complex Knossos is—being the heart of the ancient Minoan civilization and linked to the myth of the Minotaur. That said, the rest of the tour was well-paced and enjoyable. We appreciated the comfort and organization. Recommended, but be aware you may need an extra guide at Knossos.

We had a wonderful time with George. We drove through the mountains, via olive groves and vineyards to Knossos Palace. George introduced us to a guide for the Palace, Maria, who was excellent. Throughout the tour George informed us of everything from how olive oil is made to the occupations by the Venetians and Turks. The Cathedral of St Minas was utterly spectacular and after visiting the Castello George showed us some restaurants with a view that also served delicious food. A thoroughly enjoyable day.

Wonderful way to see so much and learn about Crete. Katarina had so much to share about the cultural and life on the island. She took us to an amazing taverna by Kournas Lake. She also took us to a little shop in Rethymo to sample olive oil, cheese and wine. Of course we had to buy some to being home. You won't be disappointed!
