Medina of Tunis
this sprawling labyrinth of ancient streets and alleys is one of the most impressive medieval medinas in North Africa and one of Tunisia's great treasures. It's home to numerous covered souks selling everything from shoes to shisha, as well as bustling cafes, alleyways full of artisans at work, and residential areas punctuated by large, brightly painted doorways. Historic palaces, hammams, mosques and madrassas (schools for the study of the Koran) are scattered throughout, many are richly decorated with tiles, carved stucco and marble columns.

She was very knowledgeable, she never rushed me in show me the little gems that most people will not be able to be shown unless you're going with a proper guide like this one. I will not hesitate to contract this travel agent as they do have a very personalised service and pro approach I never ever go twice to the same country but I will definitely come back here, as has left a very sweet taste my mouth

4.00Great introduction to Tunis with our guide Boutheina (Boubou). The trip was made slightly more difficult by the presence of a cruise ship in port, we managed to avoid the crowds til we got to Sidi Bou Said. The Bardolo Museum was exceptional and not to be missed. Lunch was good local food, very filling. Carthage was as expected but still good to see. Sidi Bou Said was about 90 % souvenir sellers and crowded. A great day and thanks Boubou.

5.00Our guide Chaouki was fantastic. He met us as we walked off our ship. He gave us a thorough tour of Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and the Medina. Chaouki was flexible on what we saw and how much time we spent in each place. We visited the North African American Cemetery and Memorial. We did not even know this cemetery was in Tunis. It really was moving. We had a delicious lunch and learned so much about the people and culture of Carthage. Chaouki really made our quick visit special. Thank you!

5.00Our unforgettable day in Tunisia began just after 8am. We set off with our incredible private guide Baligh (and our driver Mohammed Ali), whose historical knowledge and warmth brought every stop to life. We started, quite literally, at the beginning—Collines de Byrsa—the ancient heart of Carthage. This hill was once the centre of the powerful Phoenician city founded in the 9th century BC, later rebuilt by the Romans after the fall of Carthage in 146 BC. Standing among the ruins, overlooking sweeping panoramic views of the Mediterranean, we reflected on Tunisia’s deep past—home to some of the world’s oldest civilisations, with prehistoric cultures in the region dating back thousands of years. From there, we visited the striking Chapelle Saint-Louis de Carthage, perched above the ruins. Built in the late 19th century on the site believed to be where King Louis IX of France died during the Eighth Crusade in 1270, the chapel blends European and subtle North African architectural influences, giving its interior a surprisingly soft, almost Middle Eastern feel. Next, we explored the impressive Baths of Antoninus—the largest Roman baths built on the African continent and among the biggest in the Roman Empire. Constructed during the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius in the 2nd century AD, these baths once stretched along the coastline, complete with towering columns, vast halls, and an advanced heating system. Walking through the remains, it was easy to imagine the grandeur and daily life of Roman Carthage. We then made our way to the breathtaking village of Sidi Bou Said, often said to have inspired the iconic blue-and-white aesthetic of Santorini. Perched high above the sea, the town was a dream of whitewashed walls, vivid blue doors, ancient cobbled streets and cascading bougainvillea. Here we stopped at the famous hilltop café, Cafe Sidi Chebaune, where we indulged in a plate of delicate almond treats and fresh juice—a refreshing blend of peach, strawberry, and apple. The flavours were delightful, but the real magic was the view-stretching over the marina, the presidential palace, and the charming town below. After a bit of friendly bartering for a small ceramic tagine, we continued on to La Victoire in La Goulette for lunch. There, we enjoyed a traditional Tunisian favourite—brik, a beloved dish especially during Ramadan. Ours was a beautifully simple version: a crispy, golden pastry filled with a whole egg, folded and fried until the shell was perfectly crunchy and the yolk deliciously runny. Served with lemon and a fresh salad, it was the perfect start before a main of pan-fried whole sea bream with vegetables and an orzo-style accompaniment. We finished with a zesty lemon gelato—light, refreshing, and utterly delicious. After our delicious lunch, we made our way into the heart of Medina of Tunis, wandering through the Sidi Bashir area and into the gorgeous porticoed souks. Among the bustling lanes, we paused to admire the exterior of the Sidi Bashir Mosque, a beautiful example of traditional Tunisian Islamic architecture, known for its distinctive striped façade and ornate detailing. Like many mosques in the medina, it serves not only as a place of worship but also as a historic community hub, reflecting the deep spiritual and cultural roots of the city. The surrounding souks were alive with colour and vibrancy—lined with stalls overflowing with textiles, ceramics, spices, and handcrafted treasures. Locals warmly calling out as we passed, offering samples of fragrant perfumes and traditional foods, creating a sensory experience that was as lively as it was welcoming. It was a day rich in history, culture, and flavour—made all the more special by the stories, historical insights, and care of Baligh and Mohammed Ali.

5.00Our guide Chaouki was amazing! We were travelling with a 2 and 4 year old and he was sure to be very accommodating of the children. Very knowledgeable and was able to answer all questions we had. Knew where to go to maximize the tour while minimizing the walking/stress. Lunch was great, local restaraunt with local cuisine sampling.

5.00Maju (apologies if not spelled correctly) was an amazing guide. He provided us an incredibly authentic tour of Tunisia. We saw Carthage, Tunis, La Goullete and Sidi Bou Sad. The lunch was truly incredible as well. Overall an amazing and unique experience.
