With skip the line entrance tickets and your expert guide, begin in 138 AD when the Castel was originally built as a funeral monument for Emperor Hadrian. Here you can still explore the mausoleum dedicated to him. Explore the Treasury room deep inside the castle, where it is said his ashes were originally placed before the 5th century sacking of Rome.

As you make your way through the castle, visit the frescoed Papal apartments. Hear about the lives of the pope's and cardinals who resided here - such as the Borgia, and others who hid away when crisis struck.

Stand in a torture chambre in the courtyard where numerous executions were held, and see the famous Passeto Secreto - the 'secret passageway' that connects the castle directly with the Vatican which inspired Dan Brown's book Angels and Demons.

Finally, enjoy stunning views of the city from the top of the monument where Archangel Michael stands armed with a sword, guarding the city.

Our tour guide, Massimo Vella, was wonderful. He explained the history very clearly, answered all our questions and personalized the tour for us so we received the benefit of his knowledge while going at our pace, enhancing the tour. We would definitely schedule another tour - and with Massimo as our tour guide again.

We loved our tour with Massimo. He catered the tour to our kids but still provided enough information for adults to be engaged as well. Would definitely recommend!

The best part other than the amazing views were the incredible information and history by our fabulous guide Marcus! He went in depth to create a story and picture for our imagination. I highly recommend asking for him !

Castel Sant Angelo is a very interesting historical site. We found that having a guide was invaluable - it would be hard to understand what you're seeing without a guide. Our guide, Francesca, was very knowledgeable and did a great job of explaining the site and its role in Roman history.

Great rainy day activity! Wonderful insights into the history or Rome, the papacy and the “castle”. My guide, Marco, did a great job of navigating the tour and offering unique historical and architectural details. Ask for him by name and you won’t be disappointed!

Paola was the BEST guide. She is genuinely a pleasure of a human being, SO smart and knowledgable about so many things and she made our tour absolutely fantastic. Everything she said was interesting, well presented, she was very engaging, wonderful personality to her stories and history. I have had few guides in all the tours that I do that have done as good of a job as she did. I had the best time on this tour and would do it again!
