The monument was built by emperor Hadrian (117-138 AD) together with the Aelius bridge in front of it to become a mausoleum for himself and for his successors.
In the course of centuries it became the defensive rampart of the Vatican City, the site of a garrison, a prison, but also the offices of the Vatican Treasury and Archive.
Today the interior of the castle can be visited with its seventeenth century rich frescoed halls (Hall of Apollo, Hall of Paolina decorated with the Stories of Alexander the Great, Hall of Perseus with episode of the myth of the Greek hero, Room of Amore and Psiche), the prisons, the collection of antique arms, the painting gallery (with works by Carlo Crivelli, Luca Signorelli, and Dosso Dossi), the collection of ancient marbles, ceramics, and sculptures.
The terrace offers one of the best panoramic views of the Historical Center.

5.00We took a tour of Castel Sant’Angelo and Palazzo Farnese with Vincenzo, a guide who is now one of the strong points of every escape to Rome. This time the visit to Castel Sant’Angelo, which apparently is not one of the most attractive monuments in the capital, proved to be the scene of a lesson in history, architecture, life and death, paganism and Christianity. The Farnese palace then was the gem that made the weekend unforgettable. If you visit anything in Rome, the enthusiasm of Vincenzo Spina gives you half the joy.

5.00This was a fabulous tour. Vincent was able to bring the history alive with his great storytelling skills. The Castle was beautiful on its own, but the tour was so worthwhile.

Everything was perfectly calibrated and we immersed ourselves in a sunny and hot day inside this beautiful and complex monument that sees the stratification of stories and situations that go back centuries. Inside Castel Sant'Angelo Vincenzo guided us through the papal quarters, Hadrian's Tomb, the field of capital executions, frescoes, the fortress halls, prisons, the famous passetto and a thousand other details that enriched our visit experience, so as to make it unforgettable.
