On this full-day tour to East Serbia, you'll visit two fascinating examples of the well known Moravian school of Serbian medieval architecture - Christian Orthodox monasteries of Ravanica and Manasija. Two gems built in perhaps the most dramatic period of country's history, tell us the saga of the two rulers, father, and son, who both became saints. A journey that will also provide insights into Serbian psyche.
We will admire the 14th and 15th-century architecture and stunning frescoes in monasteries that were the lighthouses of Christianity, art, and culture. and learn about the "Resava School" well known for its manuscripts and translations throughout the 15th and 16th centuries.
Furthermore, you will enjoy nice landscapes, sometimes enchanting scenery and have a traditional Serbian lunch in a unique environment of a waterfall.

Ravanica Monastery
Completed in the year 1377, Ravanica Monastery was built by one of the most important Serbian rulers ever, Prince Lazar, a brave nobleman who selflessly laid down his life on the altar of the fatherland defending the ideals of Christianity and liberty in the Battle of Kosovo in 1389. The richly decorated exterior of the five-domed Church of the Ascension bears the seal of the Moravian school of medieval Serbian architecture, while the interior is decorated with rather damaged, but still striking frescoes. The coffin with the body of Prince Lazar is in the church and his relics are on display to believers and admirers on Sundays and other important Christian holidays.
Vodopad Veliki Buk
Veliki Buk is one of the largest and most photographed waterfalls in Serbia. Here we enjoy optional lunch and refreshments in the most pleasant surroundings of the Beljanica mountain nature reserve.

4.00Our visit to the Ravanica and Manasiya monasteries was a high point of our travel in Serbia. Nikola was an excellent guide, explaining in great detail the significance of the monasteries in Serbian history. And seeing the nearly 700-year-old frescoes still visible on the walls of the monastery chapels was pretty amazing! The monasteries are not close to the capital (Belgrade), but the highways and roads are in good shape so it's not a bad drive.
