5.00TL/DR: YES, you should book this with a tour group and not try to drive yourself. Explore rainforest, ride iconic Puffing Billy, explore grounds at Lakeside for nature walks, prompt and efficient transportation. Most day trips in Mel are over 12+ hours, and this ~5 hour excursion was exactly what we wanted as part of our Melbourne experience. We briefly considered buying tickets for Puffing Billy independently for efficiency, and we’re so glad we didn’t. You take a super efficient, small bus drive to the rainforest near Puffing Billy (50 min in bus/50 min by car). We took a nature walk then hopped back on to head 5 min to the train. Logistics & Why You Should Book: You go on a ONE WAY, 1-hour train ride from Belgrave to Lakeside. You need a tour group because the next train back from Lakeside to Belgrave is 90 minutes later from Lakeside, whereas with the tour group Michael (our tour guide) was already waiting at Lakeside to retrieve us, show us around, and give us an hour to visit the shops and take additional nature walks. ALSO, Michael took videos and pictures of our group throughout the ride and compiled a full blown MOVIE for us!!! So cool!!! We then hop back on the bus around 12PM and head back to Melbourne, again taking as long as it would to drive yourself. This was so fun and so cool to see. Our group consisted of three couples and one small family. So fun!! Must do - beautiful views & iconic experience

5.00It was a great activity to do while in Melbourne. It was lots of fun. The rainforest is breath taking and amazing so close to the city. You feel like you are on a different planet. Very organized no need to stress about anything

5.00Short hope to the rain forest and a ride on a true steam engine for about 1 hour. Fits couples and families all ages. We had great weather, but we did wear our coats. Restaurants are very basic and if travel on holidays, book your tickets in advance. Total of 4 hours tour and Michael provided great relaxed music and a environment!

5.00This tour was perfect for what we were looking for! Our tour guide, Gerry, was very friendly and entertaining and the tour was the perfect length. We got to enjoy the puffing billy train ride and see the surrounding sights without having to wait around for long. Thanks for everything!
