Laguna de Limpiopungo
Upon arrival at Cotopaxi National Park, we explore the unique high-altitude páramo ecosystem surrounding Limpiopungo Lagoon. With Cotopaxi Volcano (5,897 m) rising dramatically in the background, enjoy a gentle walk while learning about the biodiversity of this fragile Andean environment and its ecological importance. This is an excellent opportunity for wildlife observation and panoramic photography.
We will drive up to the Cotopaxi parking area at 4,500 meters above sea level, where the ascent begins toward the José Rivas Refuge at 4,810 meters on the slopes of Cotopaxi, Ecuador’s second-highest peak at 5,897 meters and one of the highest active volcanoes in the world, as well as one of the country’s most iconic highlights; this challenging yet rewarding hike can be adjusted to your fitness level and pace, and once at the refuge you may rest, warm up with a hot drink or soup, acclimate to the altitude, and, if weather and conditions allow, continue toward the glacier for an even closer encounter with this majestic Andean giant.
After the hike, we descend from the high slopes of Cotopaxi and continue to a traditional local restaurant, Rondador, located on the outskirts of the park, where you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy authentic Andean cuisine in a warm, rustic setting. Following lunch, don’t forget to ask for a few carrots to feed the friendly llamas in the garden, a charming and memorable experience, before taking in one last spectacular view of Cotopaxi rising over the páramo. Later, transfer to your selected nearby hotel for a well-deserved rest.

Embarking on a journey southward along the celebrated ‘Avenue of the Volcanoes,’ we will reach the majestic Quilotoa Lake. This stunning crater lake, nestled in Ecuador’s Andes, is renowned for its 250-meter depth and vibrant turquoise waters colored by dissolved minerals. It is a treasured destination for those in pursuit of awe-inspiring vistas and the excitement of hiking. Guests have the option to trek down to the crater’s edge or enjoy a leisurely stroll along the rim. For those desiring additional adventure, kayaking and horseback riding are available for an additional fee.

The area is surrounded by beautiful gardens filled with flowers that attract hummingbirds, making it a true paradise for bird lovers and nature enthusiasts alike.
Ruta de las cascadas
We continue along the renowned Route of the Waterfalls, a spectacular canyon road that follows the Pastaza River through lush vegetation and dramatic cliffs. This visit offers a meaningful insight into the coexistence of two civilizations whose legacy still echoes through the Andes. Please note that Ingapirca is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. On those days, we can admire the site from the exterior viewpoints or arrange an alternative cultural activity to enrich your experience.

I can’t recommend this tour company highly enough. My contact, Javier, pulled together an incredible itinerary on very short notice - just two days before my arrival, and seamlessly accommodated changes I requested both before and during the tour. Every guide and driver we worked with was outstanding: Fernando in Quito and Cotopaxi, Lincoln in Quilotoa and Baños, and Luis in Puyo. The first-class accommodations were excellent, featuring some of the highest-rated properties in each destination. Javier truly felt available around the clock, responding quickly to every text and phone call. An exceptional experience from start to finish. I highly recommend this company.

We did a 3-day guided tour from Cuenca to Quito with Luis, and it was a fantastic experience. Luis is a local from Cuenca, originally from the Ingapirca area, and his knowledge of the region really made the trip special. Along the way, we visited Ingapirca and Cotopaxi, and Luis shared not only the rich history of Ecuador but also insights into its current life and culture. He has a great way of explaining things clearly and with genuine interest, whether it’s about the country’s past, its people, or the incredible plants and wildlife we saw on the road. Besides being very knowledgeable, Luis is simply a kind and easygoing person to travel with. Everything felt well-organized and relaxed at the same time. We’d definitely recommend a tour with Luis if you want to learn more about Ecuador and enjoy the journey as much as the destinations

Absolutely unforgettable experience with Cuenca Bestours and our amazing guide Luis Gonzalez. Communication with Javier was very smooth from the beginning to the end. Questions were answered immediately thought email or chat messages. They organized a personalized 5-days tour from Quito to Guayaquil for us which consisted of many breathtaking views, hikes and exciting activities, private transportation, unique haciendas and delicious local meals. The van provided was in an excellent condition and maintained impeccably clean every day throughout the trip. Our guide Luis was extremely friendly, kind and patient. He speaks with such passion and knowledge about his country that it is impossible not to fall in love with Ecuador. I highly recommend Cuenca Bestours and Luis Gonzalez for private tours and excellent service around beautiful Ecuador!

Driving through the Andes with Luis Gonzales is an experience of a lifetime. Visiting the stunning beauty of Cotopaxi and Chimborazo volcanos is exceptionally beautiful, not unlike alpine areas, but entirely different because we are in Ecuador. The skies are clear and you can see forever. Luis pointed out details about the culture, geology, history of each area throughout our travels. Being with Luis allowed us to maximize our visit as we never got lost or had to deal with large numbers of people as our group was 2 couples. Luis is especially knowledgeable about the indigenous people and shares details about their attire and lifestyles. He is a smart and safe driver, very reliable, and a good and kind man. His english is excellent. Be prepared to travel to very high altitudes and dress for cold air. The food at the restaurant stops were tasty and very affordable for the good quality of food we enjoyed. We had numerous bathroom coffee and breaks along the way. Our stays were in the comfort class and I recommend paying the uncharge. Great trip and people. Ecuador is wonderful ….

First off, props to our great guide, Wilson. He was driver, tour guide, translator, and everything person. No worries and no problems. Unfortunately we were at the end of a two month trip throughout South America, so we were a little tired and worn out. We also were at sea level prior. You are at altitude the entire trip, so be ready. At one stop, over 16k feet up😁. You get to see so much more of Ecuador when you drive around. Roads weren’t bad, Chile and Peru were way worse. This was a good blend of history, historical sites, and unbelievable scenery. Unfortunately the volcanos hid from site most of the trip behind the clouds. The hotels chosen were nice. I would recommend this trip.

I cannot recommend Cuenca Tours highly enough! I contacted them last minute out of the blue and enquired about a private tour from Cuenca to Banos, with a night in the Andes, a night in the Amazon, and finish in Cotopaxi, and they blew it out of the water. Javier my contact at Cuenca Tours couldn't have been more accommodating and patient answering all my questions, and making everything would be arranged according to my specification. Everything was perfectly planned and organised, just 10/10! On the day of our tour we were greeted by Wilson - this man is amazing!! He was a true delight to travel with! He was full of knowledge and good advise and went out of his way to make sure we had the absolute best time. We felt so relaxed, safe and well taken care of being with him. He even made sure the rain stopped whenever we had to walk around. I think he's an angel :) I wish we could take him along on all of our travels!! We honestly have had the BEST TIME and cannot thank Javier and Wilson enough for everything that they have done for us. WE LOVE ECUADOR!! And will be back again 100% :) xx

The trip was well planned and executed. I had a short medical problem which was well handled by the guide. It was my confusion but I created a scheduling problem at the end of the trip and Cuencabestours accommodated me with the change. The guides were knowledgeable and spoke vernacular English.

Absolutely amazing experience and highly recommended. Our tour guide Wilson and driver Homero were amazing. Wilson was incredibly knowledgeable and happy to show off all of the highlights of Ecuador. He was great with our kids and kept them engaged and interested. The landscapes and food were unforgettable. The Andean highlands and culture were varied and unlike anything we have seen before. This is a section of Ecuador not to be missed. The hotels selected were amazing, comfortable with a rich history and impeccable hospitality. The itinerary was well thought out but flexible. We decided to extend our trip and Wilson worked with Javier to plan everything and ensure the best possible experience. I cannot say enough good things about this trip, the tour company, and especially the guides.

I would absolutely recommend the best Cuenca tours. We had an amazing experience with Lincoln, one of the best tour guide (knowledgeable, kind, patient, interested in knowing us, great driver..) I’ve had the chance to encounter - and I’ve traveled quite a bit. Everything was exceptional, well organized and we did get to visit and enjoy the best places of the area. I would definitely recommend upgrading to the higher end option as the hotels were also very nice, charming, comfortable and with great service and delicious food! Our second guide Wilson was just as great although we had less time with him, he went way out of his way to also take very good care of us. If you want a stress free amazing experience, these are hands down the guys to go with
