Trou aux Cerfs
Trou aux Cerfs is a dormant volcanic crater located in the town of Curepipe. Rising to an altitude of about 605 meters above sea level, this natural wonder is one of the island’s most iconic landmarks. The crater itself measures roughly 350 meters in diameter and 80 meters deep, surrounded by lush vegetation, pine trees, and exotic plants. From its rim, visitors are treated to spectacular 360-degree panoramic views of the island, stretching across the central plateau, the surrounding mountains, and on clear days, even to the distant coastlines. Believed to have formed millions of years ago, Trou aux Cerfs holds an important place in Mauritius’ geological history as a reminder of the island’s volcanic origins. The site is peaceful and easily accessible, often visited by joggers & tourists alike who come to enjoy both its natural beauty and the cool, fresh highland air. It is a must-see spot for anyone wishing to explore Mauritius’ volcanic heritage and admire breathtaking island vistas.
Mare aux Vacoas is the largest freshwater reservoir in Mauritius, located in the highlands of the Plaines Wilhems district, near Curepipe. Built in 1885 and later expanded, the reservoir plays a vital role in supplying water to a large part of the island. Surrounded by dense forests and cool misty air, Mare aux Vacoas lies at an elevation of about 600 meters above sea level, giving it a tranquil, almost mysterious atmosphere. The area is rich in native vegetation and is also close to other natural attractions such as Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao) and the Black River Gorges National Park. Due to its altitude, the region often experiences cooler temperatures and frequent rainfall, which helps replenish the reservoir. While primarily serving as an essential water source, Mare aux Vacoas is also admired for its peaceful landscape, making it a popular stop for nature lovers, photographers, and those seeking a quiet retreat amidst Mauritius’ lush greenery.
